Identity of the referee for the match of the Vietnam team

The Vietnamese team will play their opening match of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers at Binh Duong Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on March 25, against Laos. The match will be refereed by Yahya Ali Almulla, a UAE national.

Referee Yahya Ali Almulla has officiated a total of 149 matches at club and national team levels, from the UAE national championship, the U.20 Asian finals, the World Cup qualifiers, the AFC Champions League and the U.23 Asian finals.

Referee Yahya Ali Almulla

In 149 matches as a referee, Mr. Yahya Almulla has issued 623 yellow cards, 18 indirect red cards, 20 direct red cards and 64 penalties. On average, the UAE referee issues 5 yellow cards per match. He is considered a very strict referee, not afraid to use penalty cards to "cool down" hot heads. This is a detail that the Vietnamese team needs to pay attention to in the match against Laos.

Mr. Yahya Ali Almulla has refereed 2 matches at the 2022 SEA Games in Vietnam. Those were the match where U.23 Malaysia won 3-1 against U.23 Laos and U.23 Thailand defeated U.23 Indonesia with a score of 1-0 after extra time (the semi-final match had 11 yellow cards, 3 indirect red cards and 1 direct red card).

Besides referee Yahya Al Mulla, the assistant referees (linesmen, fourth referee) are all UAE nationals.

Vietnam team is ready

The Vietnam team will start training to prepare for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers from tomorrow (March 11).

Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will return to the South for the first time to play in an official tournament after 8 years of waiting. The last time the Southern stadium (Thong Nhat Stadium or Binh Duong Stadium) was lit up to welcome the Vietnamese team to play in an official tournament was in 2017, when the team met Jordan in the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers (the match ended in a 0-0 draw).

Coach Kim Sang-sik will continue to be accompanied by his fellow countrymen, Yoon Dong-hun and goalkeeper coach Lee Woon-jae. In addition, VFF also signed a contract with another Korean assistant coach, Mr. Lee Jung-soo, to replace assistant coach Choi Won-kwon, who is no longer part of the national team's coaching staff due to a job transfer.

On March 19, the team will play a FIFA Days international friendly match against the Cambodian team. This is also a warm-up match for the match against the Lao team in the opening match of the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup, taking place on March 25. Both matches will take place at Binh Duong Province Stadium.
