Teachers are 'impatient' as 12th grade students struggle with extra teaching and learning

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên18/02/2025

Many teachers are worried that at this time, 12th grade students are still rushing to find places to teach and study. In some schools in remote areas, students have to postpone their extra classes because it is difficult to find tutoring centers.

Teachers cannot register to teach extra classes because... there are no instructions!

Ms. TTH (40 years old), a teacher at a specialized high school in Dong Thap , said that at the beginning of the school year, she opened a literature class for students in grade 12. The class has about 15 students, most of whom are students who intend to choose literature as a subject in the 3-subject group for the high school graduation exam this year. Currently, the class has been suspended in accordance with Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training on extra teaching and learning.

Many teachers stopped teaching extra classes according to Circular 29.

According to Ms. H., in the literature subject alone, if the teacher's teaching method is appropriate, students will be more inspired to study and absorb knowledge. Many students in her class have participated in extra classes since grade 10. "Students like the way of communication and teaching methods, so they really want me to quickly complete the business registration procedures to teach again. However, when I went to the registration office, everyone said there were no specific instructions. So from February 14 until now, nothing has been done, we have to wait," Ms. H. confided.

Ms. H. continued: "At this time, not only teachers but also 12th grade students are very eager for extra teaching and learning. Many students go to tutoring centers to register, but many places are overloaded. As a result, some students can register, some cannot. Those who study on their own say they are facing many difficulties because they cannot solve the questions themselves (mock tests) and do not know the focus of their review. Meanwhile, those who can register have to endure crowded classrooms and review from the beginning according to the center's schedule."

Is the timing of applying the new regulations on extra teaching and learning inappropriate?

As a teacher, Ms. H. is troubled when she sees many students who are really eager to learn struggling to find places to take extra classes. Ms. H. said: "Right now, 12th graders should be focusing on reviewing and consolidating their knowledge, not rushing to many places to find places to take extra classes. If Circular 29 had taken effect after this year's high school graduation exam or at the beginning of the new school year, it would have been more reasonable."

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training does not prohibit extra teaching and learning, but it must comply with regulations.

According to Ms. H., at this time, most schools are entering the second semester midterm exams, and the high school graduation exams are not long away. It is worth noting that this is the first year that students study and take exams according to the 2018 General Education Program. The interruption of extra classes and the change in the extra class environment makes many students very worried, afraid that it will affect their exam results.

Students in remote areas have difficulty finding extra-curricular centers.

Meanwhile, Mr. NTN (43 years old), a teacher at a high school in Hau Giang , said that the school is located in a rural area. Up to now, extra classes have been taught by teachers in the school. When Circular 29 took effect, teachers stopped teaching extra classes, leaving students in a difficult situation. Because there are no extra teaching centers in the countryside.

"In our school, for example, students who want to go to a tutoring center have to go to the town or city, the nearest one is about 20 km away. This is very inconvenient, so when teachers stopped tutoring, 12th grade students now choose to study at home," said Mr. N.

Many teachers quit teaching extra classes, most students in 12 remote schools have to switch to self-study.

According to Mr. N., when the circular takes effect, all teachers in the school will comply. At this time, when students study by themselves, teachers are always ready to share knowledge, answer questions over the phone or when students go to school. However, this method cannot convey knowledge thoroughly and completely.

Therefore, the fact that students in rural areas study at home makes teachers worried, especially about their ability to enter university. Teacher N. confided: "I have been a teacher for 19 years, and have been a homeroom teacher for many years in grade 12. In reality, most students who pass the university entrance exam have taken extra classes. There are students who study by themselves, but very modestly. It is worth mentioning that only those who take extra classes, even those who take all 3 subjects in combination, can pass the entrance exam to high-scoring majors such as the military, police, medicine, and recently, pedagogy."

According to Mr. N., the management of extra teaching and learning is very necessary. However, there are general regulations in Circular 29, which, if applied to all students, are not really suitable. For example, the regulation that each subject can only be organized for extra teaching in schools for no more than 2 periods/week.

Explaining this, Mr. N. said that based on academic performance, teachers will "narrow down" students whose academic performance is not up to standard. If these students have a need to increase their study to improve their performance, want to study 4-5 periods per week to improve their knowledge, but the teacher can only teach 2 periods per week, then it is true that they cannot meet their wishes.

Similarly, the same goes for students with average or good academic performance. If students want to speed up their studies to get into university, but teachers are monotonous, teaching 2 periods a week and then taking a break, it is like being a "half-hearted ferryman", not fulfilling their role and responsibility. According to Mr. N., this causes difficulties for teachers and disadvantages for students, so he hopes there will be more flexible and reasonable adjustments.
