(Dan Tri) - Ukraine announced the destruction of Russia's command center in Kursk province, while Moscow accused Kiev of attacking the oil refinery.

The Kyiv Post news site quoted a report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on January 31 saying that Ukrainian missile and artillery forces attacked a command center of the Kursk group of the Russian Armed Forces in the city of Rylsk, located in the Kursk region of Russia.

“As a result of a coordinated and precise strike, the enemy command and control center was destroyed,” the AFU report added.

The Ukrainian General Staff described the operation as part of an ongoing strategy aimed at "eliminating enemy command centers, disrupting their ability to effectively coordinate combat and logistical operations."

“Operations aimed at destroying enemy command centers will continue until Russia’s armed offensive against Ukraine is completely stopped,” the report stressed.

The attack came before a drone attack on Russia's Volgograd region in the early hours of January 31. A Ukrainian drone attacked the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery.

The attack caused a fire at the refinery after debris from the drone fell. The fire was quickly brought under control, but one refinery worker was injured and hospitalized.

Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Combating Disinformation (CPD), said the refinery had suffered significant damage.

This is not the first time the Lukoil refinery has been attacked. Russia says its facilities have been a frequent target of Ukrainian drones and cyber attacks.

The Volgograd refinery accounts for nearly 7% of Russia's diesel output, and also produces large volumes of gasoline and fuel oil.

Ukraine continues to intensify attacks on areas within Russian territory, with Kursk province still the scene of the most intense fighting.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on January 31 that the Northern Operational Force had dealt heavy blows to units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk settlements. Russia claimed that during the fighting, an enemy counterattack was repelled.

Air strikes by military aircraft, as well as artillery fire, hit the manpower and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of Kursk.

In the past 270 hours, Russia said Ukraine had lost more than 28 soldiers and a large amount of military equipment.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost more than 55,000 servicemen since the start of the Kursk offensive in August last year.

To date, Russia has recaptured about 70% of the Kursk territory controlled by Ukraine, about more than 800 square kilometers.

Russian troops continue to attack in the direction of the city of Sudzha, military experts say.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Ukrainian army is maintaining a buffer zone in Kursk to protect Sumy and Kharkov from Russian attacks.
