Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) recruited additional 10th grade students, reaching 100% of the target.
Lower ranked schools are likely to be better.
In the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City has 36 high schools recruiting additional 10th grade students with a target of 2,203 students. Accordingly, students register for additional enrollment at their desired high schools from July 22-27 and on August 6, the schools will announce the list of successful candidates for additional 10th grade enrollment.
At Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City), the quota for additional enrollment in grade 10 is 60 students, but the school has received 64 applications. Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, the school's principal, said that the school will propose to the Department to enroll the 64 students mentioned above. According to Ms. Hao, the school's additional enrollment score is from 13.5 points or higher. Of the 64 applications received, only 6 applications are at 13.5 points, the rest are from this point or higher. "Therefore, if we accept exactly 60 quotas, there will be 4 students left with the same score of 13.5, so it is reasonable for the school to propose to accept all of them," Ms. Hao commented.
According to Ms. Hao, this year is the second year that Ho Chi Minh City has recruited additional 10th graders and the school has met the quota as initially assigned. While last year, the quota for additional recruitment was 74, by the end of the deadline, the school had only recruited 25 more students. Compared to the initial quota, there is still one class missing.
Similarly, at Long Truong High School (Thu Duc City), if last school year there was a need to recruit 90 additional students, only about 15 students registered, this year the recruitment reached about 90%. Specifically, the school leader said that the school announced to recruit 102 additional students, 90 students registered and currently has enough staff for 2 10th grade classes.
At Thanh Da High School (Binh Thanh District), the additional enrollment target is 47, but nearly 40 students have registered. According to the principal of this school, the students who registered for additional enrollment are not only from Binh Thanh District but also from neighboring areas such as Go Vap District, Thu Duc City, etc.
A parent of a student who registered for additional enrollment at Thanh Da High School happily said: "My family has researched private schools for my child to study at and calculated that the total monthly tuition fee is nearly 5 million VND, which is half of my monthly salary. Now that my child has been recruited to a public school, the tuition fee is about 2 million VND/month, suitable for my family's conditions."
Explaining the positive signs of this year's additional admission to grade 10, Ms. Hoang Thi Hao said that the new points in this year's additional admission conditions that the Department of Education and Training has stipulated for students in the districts of Can Gio, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi and Thu Duc City have created conditions for schools to meet their enrollment quotas and for students to have the opportunity to study at public schools. This is especially valuable for students in remote areas with many limited conditions.
Accordingly, the condition for participating in the additional 10th grade recruitment is that students do not pass any of their wishes to public high schools and must have 10th grade exam scores in 3 subjects: math, literature, foreign language and priority points (if any) greater than or equal to the standard score of the 3rd wish of the public high school they want to register for admission.
Additional enrollment for grade 10 creates opportunities for students and high schools that do not have enough enrollment quotas.
For students who have studied at secondary schools in the districts of Can Gio, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi and Thu Duc City, if they register for schools in the same area as their secondary school, the total entrance exam score of the candidate will be considered according to the standard score of the first choice of the public high school they want to register for admission.
Top schools still lack students
Commenting on the situation of additional recruitment for grade 10 this year, the examination officer of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that the recruitment rate for the second round reached about 80%, better than last year. In which, the lower-ranked schools recruited more students than the higher-ranked schools.
In particular, although it needs to recruit 40 students, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) has no students registering for admission. This situation also occurs at Le Quy Don High School (District 3), although it needs to recruit 15 more students, but after the deadline for submitting applications, the school's leaders said they did not receive any applications.
Sharing about this situation, Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, said that before proposing additional enrollment quotas, the school's academic affairs department contacted parents to grasp the situation and specific reasons why students were admitted but did not enroll. Among them were students who had passed the entrance exam to the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University), students studying abroad, students who had studied at a private boarding school and took the entrance exam to public grade 10 to "experience"...
In addition, according to the regulations on additional recruitment, students must achieve the standard score of the 3rd choice or higher, while Nguyen Thuong Hien School is always the school with the highest standard score in the city. This year, if students want to be considered for additional grade 10 admission to the school, they need to have a grade 10 exam score of at least 26 points, which is quite a high score, it is difficult for students to achieve this score without being admitted to grade 10.
For the above reasons, Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi said that in the next year's admission season, the school will propose to the Department of Education and Training that after determining the admission score and having a list of successful students, the Department will filter statistics on how many students are studying at private schools. From there, it is possible to make additional provisions, creating opportunities for students with approximately the admission score from the beginning, avoiding the situation where the school does not recruit enough students and many students lose their opportunities.
