CNN reported on November 14 that US President Joe Biden is about to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the White House owner is about to transfer power to President-elect Donald Trump.
The meeting, scheduled to take place on November 16 on the sidelines of the 2024 APEC Summit in Peru, will be the third meeting between the two leaders since Mr. Biden took office as president.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a number of global hot spots, including rising tensions between Washington and Beijing, according to US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. Sullivan has not confirmed the date of the meeting.
Biden and Xi had a phone call in April. The two leaders tried to contain tensions over a range of issues, from Taiwan to the South China Sea and Russia, as well as US demands for more help from China to stem the flow of fentanyl-making ingredients, which have been blamed for a surge in overdoses in the US, Reuters reported.
Mr. Sullivan said President Biden will raise concerns about a China-linked group that recently hacked into the private telecommunications systems of several senior US officials.
“The president has demonstrated that the United States and China can manage our differences and prevent competition from turning into conflict or confrontation, and he has done that by ensuring that lines of communication remain open,” Sullivan said.

US officials said Mr Biden would also raise the issue of Ukraine. The Chinese Embassy in Washington DC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The upcoming meeting also takes place as Mr. Trump prepares to take office, with a policy expected to be more tense with China, especially economically.
Mr Trump has vowed to impose a 60% tariff on imports from China. Beijing has opposed the plans.
“Moments of transition are particularly powerful in geopolitics. They are times when competitors and adversaries can see potential opportunity because you have this change in government here,” said Sullivan.
"One of the things President Biden will convey is that we need to maintain stability, clarity, predictability between the United States and China through this transition," he said.
