In an interview with CNN on the evening of February 28 (local time), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope that relations with Ukraine could be re-established with a more “pragmatic” approach after the failed negotiations between the two countries’ leaders in the Oval Office earlier.

In the interview, Secretary of State Rubio "hopes to be able to re-establish negotiations with Ukraine, to develop maturity and pragmatism", while affirming that "every night, Ukrainians are still dying in this conflict".
“We are trying to end this unbearable conflict,” Mr. Rubio said.
In addition, Mr. Rubio assessed the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his US counterpart Donald Trump at the White House as a "failure", thereby calling on Mr. Zelensky to apologize.
The US diplomat also criticized President Zelensky for not really wanting peace in Ukraine.
According to Mr. Rubio, President Trump will seek to reach an agreement to resolve the conflict even if the chance of peace is only 1%.
Talks between President Zelensky and his counterpart Donald Trump on a peaceful solution for Ukraine have collapsed after an argument in the Oval Office.
Senior Trump administration officials demanded that the Ukrainian delegation leave the White House immediately and cancel a joint press conference.
President Donald Trump also canceled plans to sign a rare earth minerals deal with Mr. Zelensky despite the Ukrainian government having ratified the deal.
Meanwhile, AFP news agency quoted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as saying that Australia will "stand with Ukraine". The statement was made just hours after negotiations between President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian leader broke down.
Prime Minister Albanese stressed that the Ukrainian people are fighting "not just for national sovereignty, they are fighting for international law", Canberra will continue to stand side by side with Ukraine until necessary because "this is the struggle of a democratic country".
Australia's relationship with Russia has been strained for years. Australia opposed Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, condemning the action as illegal and immoral, and pledged AU$1.5 billion (US$931 million) in support for Ukraine.
