The White House announced on February 28 that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had returned assets seized during a raid on President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
“The FBI is returning to President Trump his assets that were taken in illegal raids. We will take possession of them today and put them on Air Force One,” White House communications director Steven Cheung said on February 28.
The Hill reported that the FBI seized Trump's assets and documents in 33 boxes during a search of Mar-a-Lago in August 2022 as part of an investigation into alleged mishandling of classified documents and obstruction of document recovery. At the Florida resort, the FBI discovered many sensitive classified documents that Trump brought to his private residence after the end of his first term.

Mr. Trump and his allies have criticized the FBI, calling the search warrant unnecessary. Before the FBI arrived at Mar-a-Lago, the US Justice Department and the National Archives contacted Mr. Trump to request the documents.
Former US Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Mr. Jack Smith as special prosecutor to investigate Mr. Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents. In July 2024, Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case, ruling that Mr. Smith's appointment was unconstitutional.
President Trump said some of the boxes of documents returned by the US Justice Department will later be displayed in the presidential library he plans to build in the future.
“These boxes are headed to Florida and will one day become part of the Trump Presidential Library. Justice has finally prevailed. I did absolutely nothing wrong. This was an attack on a political opponent that clearly did not work,” Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on February 28.
