In a statement, the head of Germany's foreign intelligence agency, Bruno Kahl, said that Russian forces will be able to attack NATO territory by the end of this decade at the latest.
"Russian forces will be able to attack NATO by the end of this decade at the latest," Mr Kahl told a parliamentary committee in the capital Berlin.
According to him, Russia now considers the Federal Republic of Germany an enemy, noting that Berlin is the second largest country supporting Ukraine, after the United States. "We are in direct conflict with Russia," he said.
“The situation is likely to escalate further,” Mr Kahl said, adding that politicians must provide German security agencies with the resources and authority to combat these dangers.
This is not the first time European countries have raised this issue. In late 2023, the German newspaper Bild also cited a European intelligence source as saying that a potential Russian attack on Europe could occur during the transition period after the US presidential election in 2024.
This transition period lasts three months, from after the US presidential election in November 2024 to the inauguration of the new president in January 2025.
According to intelligence sources, Russia could aim to launch an attack on Europe during this transition period, especially if the Republican front-runner, former President Donald Trump, is re-elected.
Meanwhile, Poland's national security agency expressed more pressing concerns, predicting that Russia could be capable of attacking NATO in less than 36 months.
Polish officials have previously predicted that Russia could target a NATO alliance member in Eastern Europe, which includes countries such as Poland, Estonia, Romania and Lithuania.
