CNN reported on May 24 that the US Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) has just announced that it has found the wreck of the USS Harder submarine in the East Sea, one of the most famous US submarines in World War II.

The submarine lies at a depth of about 900 m in the waters north of the Philippine island of Luzon, standing upright and largely intact, except for damage to the rear of its conning tower caused by a Japanese depth charge.

The submarine USS Harder was sunk in battle on August 24, 1944, along with all 79 crew members while on patrol as the US sought to take control of the Philippines from the Japanese.

"USS Harder was lost in the process of victory. We must not forget that victory has its price, and so does freedom," said NHHC director Samuel J. Cox, a retired US admiral.

According to US Navy history, this submarine sank two Japanese escorts off the Bataan Peninsula (Philippines) on August 22, 1944 and then moved north along the Luzon coast with two other submarines to find more targets.

During the battle with the Japanese escort ship CD-22 on the morning of August 24, USS Harder fired three torpedoes but missed its target, and was then sunk by a fifth wave of Japanese depth charges, according to Japanese records cited by NHHC.

NHHC said the US submarine wreck was confirmed using data provided by the Lost 52 Project, an effort led by Tim Taylor, CEO of Tiburon Subsea, to search for 52 US submarines lost during World War II.

The group has previously found at least six submarines sunk during World War II.

Captain Samuel Dealey was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military's highest honor, for his role in the fifth patrol of the submarine USS Harder from March to July 1944. During that period, the submarine sank three Japanese destroyers and severely damaged two others in just four days.
