Shitsui Hakoishi in Japan has just been recognized as the oldest female barber in the world at the age of 108.
On March 5, the Guinness World Records officially recognized Shitsui Hakoishi (108 years old, living in Nakagawa town, Tochigi province, eastern Japan) as the world's oldest female barber, according to Kyodo News.

The ceremony to award the record certificate to Mrs. Hakoishi took place locally, with the presence and congratulations of her neighbors and regular customers.
"My life has been difficult since I was a child, but I am truly happy," the old woman who just became a record holder shared.
Hakoishi began her apprenticeship at a Tokyo barbershop at the age of 14. By 1936, she had obtained her barber's license.
She then opened a small hair salon with her husband. Her husband was also a hairdresser. After the salon was destroyed in an air raid, she evacuated to her hometown in Tochigi. Her husband also died in the war. She opened a small hair salon in her hometown and worked while raising her two children.
In March 2021, she participated in the torch relay at the Beijing Olympics.
According to Kyodo News, although knee pain has prevented her from having as many customers as before, she still cuts hair for customers whenever they book an appointment.
“Some people even come from far away to get their hair cut, so I want to continue doing this job as long as possible,” said Hakoishi.
