On the morning of October 29, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control (Steering Committee) chaired the Conference to review the work of Covid-19 prevention and control.

The event was held online at the Government Headquarters bridge with 63 provinces and centrally-run cities.

Attending the conference were Head of the Central Committee for Mass Mobilization Bui Thi Minh Hoai; Deputy Prime Ministers Le Minh Khai and Tran Hong Ha; leaders of central departments, ministries and branches; Secretaries of provincial and municipal Party Committees; Chairmen of People's Committees of centrally-run provinces and cities; and representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam.

Opening the Conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh reiterated the difficulties and complexities in the work of preventing and fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, especially at the beginning of the pandemic and when the pandemic broke out strongly, in the conditions where Vietnam lacked many aspects, had no experience, and the pandemic was unprecedented...

Looking back over 3 years of pandemic prevention and control, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that in December 2019, the world recorded the first Covid-19 case; on January 23, 2020, Vietnam recorded the first Covid-19 case.

In the face of the epidemic situation, on March 30, 2020, General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong called on compatriots, comrades, soldiers nationwide and overseas Vietnamese to join hands in the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic. Immediately after that, on March 31, 2020, the Prime Minister issued Directive No. 16, implementing social isolation for 15 days to prevent and control the epidemic.

However, after more than a year of fighting the pandemic, in April 2021, the whole country faced the fourth wave of the pandemic, mainly the highly virulent Delta variant, spreading rapidly, penetrating deep into the community in 62/63 provinces and cities, causing very serious consequences, especially in Ho Chi Minh City. On July 29, 2021, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong issued a second call for the prevention of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Responding to the General Secretary's call, the Politburo's drastic direction, the National Assembly's support, and in the spirit of "Unity, unity, great unity; success, success, great success", the entire political system, all levels, sectors, localities, people, businesses, overseas Vietnamese and international friends joined hands to prevent and fight the pandemic.

In July 2021, Vietnam introduced a formula to prevent and control the Covid-19 epidemic; promoted the implementation of the vaccine strategy, and organized free Covid-19 vaccination for the entire population.

“This is a key issue, decisive to victory in the prevention and control of the Covid-19 pandemic. Vietnam is behind; opening the economy, welcoming tourists, organizing the 31st SEA Games... By October 20, 2023, Covid-19 has been officially reclassified from group A infectious disease to group B in Vietnam,” the Prime Minister affirmed.

The Prime Minister requested the Conference to focus on evaluating the leadership, direction and implementation of all levels, sectors and localities in epidemic prevention and control. The Conference focused on evaluating the results achieved; good practices, effective movements and models in epidemic prevention and control; analyzing the existing problems, limitations, causes and lessons learned in epidemic prevention and control to better prepare for responding to public health emergencies; flexibly and creatively applying them to other areas of socio-economic life.
