Statistics show that up to 27% of candidates achieved IELTS 7.0 or higher, university admissions in 2025 are even "hotter"

According to British Council statistics, in the period 2023–2024, 27% of candidates in Vietnam achieved band 7.0 or above for the IELTS Academic test, while 23% achieved this level for the General test.

In recent years, the IELTS foreign language certificate has received much attention from students and universities. The scores of this certificate have gradually increased, creating greater competitiveness in each admission season.

Speaking to Dan Viet Newspaper, a spokesperson for the British Council said: According to the latest statistics shared by IELTS partners on global candidate performance in the 2023-2024 period, 27% of candidates in Vietnam achieved band 7.0 or higher for the IELTS Academic test, while 23% achieved this level for the General Test. This shows the solid English proficiency of Vietnamese IELTS candidates as well as their efforts in grasping study and career opportunities."

A spokesperson for the British Council affirmed that IELTS is still the most trusted English proficiency test in the world, recognized by more than 12,500 organizations in 140 countries. In Vietnam, IELTS is widely recognized as a certificate that meets high school graduation requirements and is also used by many universities as a condition for undergraduate admission.

It is known that the British Council is implementing many initiatives to support candidates in the 2025 admissions season, while helping Vietnamese students improve their IELTS scores, such as the IELTS Day event series, providing a free practice platform and mock tests for all candidates. From April, the British Council will support candidates to switch to computer-based IELTS through specialized test preparation resources, and upgrade computer-based IELTS test scores.

Schools expand English-taught programs

On the school side, this year also recorded a lot of new information related to foreign language certificates. Master Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of the Department of Communications and Admissions, University of Commerce, said that in 2025, the school added 7 new international vocational training programs. Students with interdisciplinary professional capacity, along with foreign language proficiency, are supported by businesses in career training from the first year, so they have great job opportunities, and can participate in the international labor market after graduation.

In addition, the school has also started to open advanced training programs and international dual degree programs. We have seen a significant increase in the number of candidates with foreign language certificates. Previously, students who wanted to access an international environment had to study abroad. Now, they have the opportunity to study domestically but take English courses, and the teaching staff teaches entirely in English, prioritizing training with the best quality."

Dr. Than Thanh Son, Head of Training Department, Hanoi University of Industry, also said: "This year's quota of the school is 7,990, an increase of 340 quotas for 10 training programs in English, helping students have the opportunity to train entirely in English so that they can later work in an international environment and attract international students to the school.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Director of the Center for Admissions and Business Relations, University of Finance - Marketing, said: "This year, the school will enroll students in 5 programs: standard program, integrated program, full English program (international orientation), and special orientation program. For the full English program, the admission requirement is that students must achieve IELTS 5.5 or higher, depending on the 3-year or 4-year program. In particular, when having a foreign language certificate, students will not have to study English.

"The labor market in the AI era requires English, so the trend of studying programs in English is increasing. Students can study with foreign professors, receive dual degrees, and find work very conveniently after graduation."
