Does Vietnamese sports still have a chance at the Paris Olympics?
Báo Thanh niên•31/07/2024
As of yesterday (July 30), after 4 days of official competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Vietnamese sports delegation has yet to touch a medal and must make more efforts in the remaining competition days.
The most impressive achievement that the Vietnamese sports delegation has achieved so far is the 4th place of shooter Trinh Thu Vinh in the women's 10m pistol event. Trinh Thu Vinh showed her ability when competing fairly with her opponents, sometimes achieving scores equal to the top 3 but unfortunately falling short in the decisive shots. The 24-year-old shooter from Thanh Hoa continues to participate in the women's 25m pistol event on August 2. Expert Park Chung-gun and the coaching staff of the Vietnamese shooting team have faith in Thu Vinh's ability to make a difference. If she can maintain high concentration and accuracy in her shots, Thu Vinh promises to reap success in the championship race with the remaining 29 opponents in the women's 25m pistol event.

Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Head of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 2024 Paris Olympics, said that Trinh Thu Vinh showed great effort and determination to find a chance to enter the finals and compete for medals in her remaining events. "In addition, the opportunity to compete for medals is still ahead when we compete in weightlifting and cycling...", Mr. Dang Ha Viet said. The cycling event took place on August 4 with the participation of cyclist Nguyen Thi That in the women's road event. Having won the Asian championship three times and having a good sprinting ability, although having to compete with very strong opponents, if she finishes in the same group, the female cyclist from An Giang will have a chance to compete for medals. Meanwhile, in weightlifting, Trinh Van Vinh is currently ranked 9th out of 12 athletes competing in the finals of the 61 kg weight class. He is expected to make a breakthrough and will calculate reasonable tactics to be able to compete for medals. In badminton, Vietnam's No. 1 player Nguyen Thuy Linh, currently ranked 26th in the world, is also expected to make her mark. In the opening match of the group stage, she overwhelmingly defeated Australian player Tiffany Ho (ranked 81st in the world). Today, she will face world No. 11 player Beiwen Zhang (USA) in the match for the top spot and the only ticket to the knockout round. Having defeated Beiwen Zhang excellently last year, and now in good form, Nguyen Thuy Linh promises to repeat her old achievement to advance to the round of 16 best players. In the men's singles, player Le Duc Phat (ranked 70th in the world) will find it difficult to surprise his strong opponent from the group stage, Prannoy (India, ranked 13th in the world). In other sports such as swimming (Nguyen Huy Hoang, Vo Thi My Tien), athletics (Tran Thi Nhi Yen), archery (Le Quoc Phong, Do Thi Anh Nguyet), canoeing (Nguyen Thi Huong), the ability of Vietnamese athletes to create a surprise to win medals is very low due to the large difference in skill level.
