A submarine has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean while carrying tourists to the wreck of the Titanic, prompting US authorities to launch a large-scale search.
The US Coast Guard Boston Command announced today that it is conducting a search and rescue operation after a submersible carrying tourists went missing while touring the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It is not clear how many people were on board the submarine, nor what condition the vehicle was in before it went missing.

The Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912, killing 1,514 of the 2,224 people on board. The Titanic was found in 1985 at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters, about 600 kilometers off the Canadian coast of Newfoundland.
Since then, scientists and professional expeditions have visited the area. OceanGate, a US-based company, announced a tour to see the Titanic wreck in 2020 for about $250,000 per person. Tourists will spend eight days at sea, being taken down to the Titanic wreck site in a six-person submersible.
