On July 6, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Ben Tre province to organize a conference on "Managing the quality of fruit tree varieties in the South". According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, fruit is an important industry with about 50 varieties, an area of over 1.2 million hectares, and a total annual output of over 13.5 million tons, which has been serving domestic consumption needs well, while increasing exports in terms of variety, product structure, market and turnover value, contributing positively to the growth of the cultivation industry. Besides the positive aspects, the production and business of fruit tree varieties still have shortcomings and limitations.
In particular, the system of seed production and supply at the household and small-scale business scale currently accounts for the majority. Very few large enterprises participate in investing in seed production. Many establishments that do not fully meet the regulations still participate in production and business, making it difficult to manage and ensure the origin and quality of seedlings.
In addition, the inspection and testing of seed quality in the past has not met the requirements and has not been effective. The system of standards and regulations at the national and grassroots levels has not been really complete, causing difficulties in the management and inspection of fruit tree varieties in the past.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Canh, Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, said that with a fruit tree seedling production area of over 1,500 hectares, the province has become a locality with a large production area compared to other localities.
Currently, the total number of households producing and trading seedlings in the province is more than 8,000, mainly concentrated in the districts of Cho Lach, Mo Cay Bac and Chau Thanh. The total number of seedlings supplied to the market annually is over 20 million products of all kinds. The varieties of plants circulating on the market always have clear origins, meet quality standards, and have labels according to regulations.
In addition, there are still certain difficulties in the output market, and the regulations on seed production and trading are still inadequate. At the same time, there are many businesses that do not comply with the management of specialized agencies, operate freely and unregulated, so the quality of products is not consistent.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung said that he would publicize the violating seed production facilities to gradually manage the quality of fruit tree varieties. In addition, it is necessary to revise and perfect legal documents related to state management in the production and trading of plant varieties to ensure suitability and effectiveness; at the same time, strengthen the propaganda and dissemination of legal documents, inspection and handling of violations in the production and trading of fruit tree varieties.
In particular, it is necessary to strengthen the construction and consolidation of breeding systems in localities, and encourage production and trading establishments to ensure quality of breeds in the area.
