In recent years, people in Tan Phu commune, Tan Ky district, Nghe An province have converted their traditional fish ponds to raise monosex tilapia. Mr. Nguyen Van Do (residing in Tan Phu commune, Tan Ky district) is one of the households with the largest area of monosex tilapia ponds in the area. Currently, Mr. Do has 4 hectares of monosex tilapia ponds.
In recent years, people in Tan Phu commune, Tan Ky district, Nghe An province have focused on raising monosex tilapia. Thanks to raising monosex tilapia, many households in Tan Phu commune have a stable income.
Mr. Do started raising this omnivorous fish in 2007. Through his own research, Mr. Do realized that this fish species is suitable for the water environment and climate in the area. After visiting and learning more about some tilapia farming models in other provinces, Mr. Do decided to bring this omnivorous fish species to release in the pond.
"Fish fry is very important, deciding the success or failure of fish farming. Therefore, I often choose reputable fish farms. Fish fry are imported from China, Taiwan, and Thailand, so they are very safe. Only when I have a guaranteed source of fish fry can I feel secure in investing," Mr. Do shared.
Monosex tilapia is purchased by traders at 36,000 - 40,000 VND/kg.
Single tilapia pond is equipped with an oxygen generator.
Sharing more about his experience in raising monosex tilapia, Mr. Nguyen Van Do said: "Before releasing the fish, it is necessary to clean the pond. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to weather and water conditions to make appropriate adjustments. In the summer, when the weather is hot, monosex tilapia often lack oxygen and suffer from some intestinal diseases. At this time, it is necessary to pay attention to observation, increase the time to increase oxygen aeration, water treatment enzymes and treat intestinal diseases for fish."
Monosex tilapia can be raised for about 11 - 13 months before being sold. When the fish reach a weight of about 1.2 - 1.5 kg, they can be sold. Some tilapia even reach a weight of over 2 kg.
When monosex tilapia can be harvested, people just need to pick up the phone, call and the traders will send a truck to buy them. Traders buy monosex tilapia at a stable price of 36,000 - 40,000 VND/kg. Raising monosex tilapia helps Mr. Do earn a profit of 150 million VND/ha.
Monosex tilapia can withstand hot weather, have few diseases, and have stable output. Mr. Nguyen Van Do in Tan Phu commune, Tan Ky district, Nghe An province said that raising monosex tilapia brings a profit of about 150 million VND/ha.
According to Mr. Do, after purchasing, traders will distribute monosex tilapia to major wholesale markets in the North and South. Some are sold to processing facilities to make fish cakes.
From the initial households, many families have now boldly invested in raising monosex tilapia and other aquatic species. The Tan Phu Commune Farmers’ Association has also guided and established a cooperative group for raising Tan Phu tilapia.
Currently, the Tan Phu tilapia aquaculture association, Tan Ky district, Nghe An has 21 members. The association operates effectively, helping people have a stable income.
Members of the cooperative share experiences and techniques in raising monosex tilapia, and support each other in terms of breeds, feed, and sources of consumption. In addition, members also research and learn together to improve productivity and product quality.
In 2022, monosex tilapia of cooperative members will be recognized as a 3-star OCOP product. Thanks to that, the value of monosex tilapia will also be increased, increasing income for people.
The tilapia aquaculture cooperative operates effectively, with many new members joining. Up to now, the cooperative has 21 members who have become rich together thanks to raising monosex tilapia.
