As one of the provinces participating in FSC-standard forest planting very early, Quang Tri has a large area of certified forests with a total forest area participating in assessment and certification by the end of 2024 of 26,136 hectares. To ensure high efficiency in FSC-standard forest planting, in recent years, in addition to guiding care processes and other regulations, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has built a good forestry nursery that meets high quality standards.

With the investment of national agricultural extension capital, in the period of 2022 - 2024, the Quang Tri Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will implement the Project "Building a model of nursery garden for forestry seedlings production for raw material forest planting" in the two provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue to achieve the following goals: developing, consolidating and enhancing the capacity of cooperatives and cooperative members in raw material areas; agricultural extension and transfer and application of science and technology for cooperatives and people participating in the association.
Applying information technology to manage raw material areas to serve linkages associated with traceability; building a community agricultural extension model to serve sustainable raw material area development; consolidating the grassroots agricultural extension system through replicating the community agricultural extension team model; communicating the development of raw material areas. The total investment for the project is nearly 6.7 billion VND. Of which, the project budget is 4.9 billion VND, and the people contribute nearly 1.8 billion VND.
Starting the project, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center focused on organizing training for foresters in the two provinces to understand the process of operating nurseries and planting large timber forests according to sustainable forest management certification, building production management organization models and integrating many information and propaganda activities to effectively propagate the project's activities to people to understand and implement.
In implementing the project, community agricultural extension teams also participated in understanding the activities and implementation processes. From there, they propagated to localities in the raw material forest growing area to visit, learn and follow in order to promote high-tech applications in the production of high-quality forestry varieties for the raw material area.
After 3 years of implementation, the project has successfully built 6 improved nursery models for tissue culture hybrid acacia seedlings with an area of 1,000 m2/garden. Of which, 4 models are in Quang Tri province; 2 models are in Thua Thien Hue. The project has focused on transferring techniques for tissue culture hybrid acacia seedlings, operating improved nurseries, people have mastered the techniques and successfully produced 600,000 tissue culture hybrid acacia seedlings.
Currently, with 6 nurseries built by the project, it can annually supply the market with a maximum of about 1.8 million hybrid acacia seedlings, meeting the demand for seedlings for afforestation of about 900 hectares. Moreover, from the standard seed sources of the nurseries built by the project, the source of mother trees will be provided for prestigious and quality nursery nurseries for cuttings in Quang Tri province and Hue city in the coming years. The project has achieved many goals, the most important of which is to create a solid foundation for Quang Tri to become the center of raw wood for planted forests in the Central region in the near future.
Director of Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center Tran Can said: With the technology of the improved nursery, there are automatic and semi-automatic shading systems, rain and wind shelters, humidity domes, automatic misting and sprinkler systems, creating suitable conditions for successfully nurturing tissue-hybrid acacia seedlings with a high survival rate of over 90%.
The project successfully built 6 standard nurseries as a facility to supply high-quality forestry seedlings for raw material forest growing areas. This is also the basis for expanding the application of this improved nursery system to forestry seedling production in Quang Tri province and Hue city in the coming time.
The project "Building a model of nursery garden for forestry seedlings production for raw material forest planting" has been completed, helping forest growers in Quang Tri province and Hue city access effective forestry production methods in applying tissue culture seedlings to nursery production; mastering the steps to apply sustainable forestry management processes to forest planting, accessing practical steps to be certified in large timber forest planting for raw material areas, contributing to promoting the development of the province's forestry industry.
From the achieved results, it is confirmed that the project has promoted initial effectiveness, applying science and technology in the construction of nurseries and the creation of tissue culture seedlings at the cooperative scale (previously, this was only possible for large enterprises).
This has created a proactive approach to tissue culture technology in the production of high-quality forestry seedlings to meet the supply of qualified forestry seedlings for sustainable forest development associated with forest certification, contributing to improving the quality of raw materials for wood processing and increasing the value of forestry production in the province's agriculture and rural development sector.
