Continuous rain in recent days along with large amounts of water from upstream caused hundreds of houses in Tan Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh to be flooded from 0.5-2m deep.
Mr. Truong Thanh Duan, Chairman of Tan Hoa Commune People's Committee, said that this commune is located in a basin surrounded by rocky mountains. In the past two days, heavy rains have caused water from upstream rivers and streams to flow down, deeply inundating hundreds of houses.
As of 10am today, heavy rains and floods have submerged more than 400 houses in Tan Hoa to a depth of 0.5 - 2m. Early this morning, floodwaters rose nearly 2m, completely isolating Tan Hoa from the outside world. The water is still rising.
After storm No. 4 passed, local authorities warned that the storm's circulation could cause heavy rain and flooding. Unlike previous years, many properties and household items were submerged and swept away by water. This year, people prepared furniture, items and properties to take shelter on floating houses.
Floating houses are an initiative that has been implemented many years ago in Tan Hoa, helping people adapt to floods. When the water level rises, the house will automatically float up to the water level, ensuring the safety of people and property inside.
According to Mr. Duẩn, the whole commune has more than 700 households, and the people here are used to "living with floods". Especially thanks to the floating houses, the local people have responded proactively, minimizing property damage.
Continuous heavy rains have caused localized flooding and isolation in many areas in Minh Hoa district. In Hung Trau area, the road leading to three villages of the Ruc people in Thuong Hoa commune was flooded to a depth of 1.5m.
Currently, the Border Guard and local authorities have assigned officers to be on duty and posted no-entry signs at culverts and spillways to ensure people’s safety. At the same time, the units are also closely monitoring weather developments to promptly respond to any situations that may arise.
