Phu Quoc simultaneously upgrades infrastructure to welcome APEC 2027

In particular, expanding Phu Quoc international airport, upgrading seaports, developing connecting transport systems and building modern convention and exhibition centers are considered top priorities.

Urgent site clearance

The launching ceremony of projects serving the APEC 2027 Summit Week in Phu Quoc in mid-March 2025 announced a list of key local projects and works for the big event.

Mr. Tran Minh Khoa - Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee - said that the locality has surveyed the projects and found that there is much work to be done, especially urgently expanding and upgrading Phu Quoc International Airport because it is overloaded.

The city also lacks a conference, press, and exhibition center to promote Phu Quoc's image as well as to exchange businesses and international economic organizations attending the conference.

"We are urgently coordinating with relevant units to review the planning, handle land issues, speed up site clearance, and provide adequate compensation to people to create clean land to expand Phu Quoc International Airport because this is considered an important gateway to successfully organize APEC 2027," said Mr. Khoa.

According to the proposal, Phu Quoc airport will be expanded to a scale of 1,026 hectares, building runway No. 2, parking lot for about 40 aircraft, building terminal T2, waiting room, VIP lounge (head of state level) with an area of ^​​700m2 ; building warehouse, cargo terminal... These items aim to ensure the dual goal of developing tourism, socio-economy on the island while promptly serving APEC 2027.

Mobilizing resources for infrastructure

According to statistics from the City People's Committee, Phu Quoc currently has about 320 projects with a land use area of ​​about 10,652 hectares, with a total registered investment capital of over 412,000 billion VND. Large corporations such as Vin Group, Sun Group... have come to invest in developing commercial and tourism services with many unique and classy entertainment spots.

Mr. Dang Minh Truong - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group Corporation - said that the APEC 2027 event held in Phu Quoc will be an important milestone, creating momentum to turn Phu Quoc into a leading tourism - economic center in the region and the world.

"If entrusted, we commit to accompany the Government and local authorities to mobilize all resources to realize this vision," said Mr. Truong.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ngo Nhat Minh - general manager of Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc Hotel - also said that the hotel has reviewed the number of rooms, ensuring standards, arranging them according to international 5-star standards, meeting and conference room systems have been updated, and advanced equipment systems have been installed.

"Regarding cuisine, we have a plan to diversify international cuisine to suit the needs of international guests; training and providing foreign language training for staff to ensure meeting customer needs," Mr. Truong informed.

On the government side, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan - Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee - said that the province has proactively assessed infrastructure, proposed to the Government a number of key projects, as well as recommended appropriate mechanisms and policies; proposed solutions and roadmaps to maximize the mobilization of the political system, with the participation of the people, resources from society, especially strategic investors to thoroughly prepare for the upcoming APEC 2027.

In particular, An Thoi international seaport (An Thoi ward) will be upgraded to a scale of 100 hectares, able to receive the world's largest cruise ships; expanding provincial road 975, investing in building a new urban railway line, upgrading the Duong Dong - Bac Dao axis routes (975B) and the East - West highway project of Phu Quoc island...

In particular, the APEC multi-functional complex in An Thoi ward is a key project, with a sea encroachment area of ​​57 hectares (no need for site clearance), including the following works: conference and exhibition center, multi-purpose auditorium; international press center, APEC square...

"Phu Quoc has basically met the conditions to organize conferences and international events. By launching projects to serve APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc, it will not only serve the conference but also contribute to building this beautiful island into an international-class tourism and service center," Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan expected.

How does Phu Quoc handle household waste?

Phu Quoc generates about 180 - 200 tons of new domestic waste every day and is gathered at the temporary landfill Dong Cay Sao (Cua Duong commune).

The locality has put into operation the temporary Dong Cay Sao waste treatment plant with a registered capacity to treat more than 125,000 tons of household waste within 22 months (from May 9, 2024 to March 9, 2026), but it has not yet been able to completely solve the needs on the island.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung - Head of Phu Quoc Economic Zone Management Board - informed that Kien Giang has agreed to convert about 14.55 hectares of special-use forest in plot 2, sub-zone 68, Bai Bon hamlet (Ham Ninh commune) to build a waste treatment plant with a processing capacity of about 250 tons/day and night.

"The unit has recorded four investors expressing their desire to invest in advanced technologies to build a domestic waste treatment plant on Phu Quoc Island.

We are urgently completing procedures and related documents to invest in building a domestic waste treatment plant in Bai Bon hamlet, contributing to environmental protection and developing local tourism," said Mr. Tung.

Early establishment of APEC 2027 Steering Committee

At the launching ceremony of the APEC 2027 project in Phu Quoc on March 14, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha requested Kien Giang province to promptly establish the APEC 2027 Steering Committee, assign tasks to each member, to deploy, check and review progress, promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, carry out site clearance well, and accelerate the promotion of attracting investors to implement infrastructure and projects serving APEC 2027.
