(CLO) On December 16, the Constitutional Court of South Korea announced that the first hearing related to the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol will be held on December 27.
The Constitutional Court said it was sending the impeachment trial request to President Yoon and asking him to respond, although Yoon was not required to respond.

The court also affirmed that it will prioritize the impeachment case against President Yoon, with a maximum period of 180 days to make a decision on whether to uphold the impeachment and remove him from office, or reinstate him.
To assist in the investigation and trial process, the Constitutional Court of Korea has also established a task force of about 10 court officials, whose task is to research the facts and related legal issues, and provide necessary information to the judges during the deliberations.
If the impeachment is upheld and President Yoon is removed from office, he would become the second president in South Korean history to be removed from office, after former President Park Geun Hye in 2017, which could lead to a snap presidential election within 60 days.
Previously on December 14, the South Korean National Assembly approved the impeachment of President Yoon in connection with the decision to impose martial law on December 3.
