A 23-year-old male patient had a gastrointestinal endoscopy and was unexpectedly diagnosed with early-stage stomach cancer, even though he had previously only had common digestive disorders.

According to the patient, he only had symptoms of bloating and indigestion when he came for examination. Endoscopy results showed moderate gastritis, atrophic gastritis, and gastric antrum mucosal tumor.

Stomach cancer is a malignant disease that can occur at any age, most commonly in people over 45 years old, but now there is a tendency to get younger.

During the endoscopy, the doctor took a sample of the damaged tissue for biopsy. The result was early stage cancer. The patient was quite surprised because he was young, did not use alcohol or tobacco, and had no family history of cancer.

Similarly, Ms. Tr. (30 years old, Ho Chi Minh City), sometimes had indigestion so she had a gastroscopy. The results of the gastroscopy showed gastritis, gastric mucosal atrophy, and nodular gastritis.

At the same time, a lesion measuring about 8 mm in size was detected in the antrum. The doctor used an AI-based endoscope with electronic staining and magnification of more than 150 times, detecting these smallest abnormalities early.

The biopsy results showed that Ms. Tr. had early stage stomach cancer. The patient was indicated for oral endoscopy to resect the lesion and remove the entire tumor using the submucosal dissection (ESD) method.

After 30 minutes, the tumor was completely removed, the patient had no pain and was discharged the same day. Because the cancer cells had been completely eradicated, the patient did not need any additional treatment afterwards. The patient had regular check-ups and gastroscopy as scheduled.

Dr. Tran Thanh Binh, Center for Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery of Digestive Surgery, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that recently there have been many cases of young patients with early-stage stomach cancer.

Common symptoms of these people are bloating and indigestion, without obvious symptoms so they are easily overlooked because they think they are just common digestive disorders.

Early stage stomach cancer is easier and more effective to treat. Doctors can remove the entire tumor, completely eliminating the need for additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.

Late detection of gastric cancer makes treatment difficult and complicated, requiring multimodal treatment, including partial or total gastrectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted drug therapy...

This not only affects the patient's health, spirit, time and effort, but also results in poor treatment results and low survival prognosis.

According to doctors, stomach cancer is a malignant disease that can occur at any age, most commonly in people over 45 years old, but currently there is a tendency to get younger.

The disease has the third highest mortality rate in Vietnam, after liver cancer and lung cancer. If detected early and treated promptly, the disease can be cured in over 90%.

Stomach cancer is a fairly common disease, with the third highest mortality rate after liver cancer and lung cancer. If stomach cancer is detected early, the treatment process is simple and the survival rate is high. However, according to Dr. Thai, stomach cancer often develops silently, with many cases having only vague symptoms.

Currently, stomach cancer can be detected early by flexible endoscopy with biopsy. Thanks to that, doctors will do some tests to diagnose and classify the stage of stomach cancer to give appropriate treatment.

In Vietnam, less than 5% of stomach cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. According to statistics, the rate of advanced stomach cancers missed during endoscopy is from 5 - 10% of cases.

The process of early cancer screening endoscopy must ensure that no lesions are missed when the patient fasts 6-8 hours beforehand, takes foam and mucus-dissolving medicine 15-20 minutes before the endoscopy, and the anesthesia time is enough for the doctor to observe, take pictures, and record all positions according to regulations.

Clinical examination and thorough medical history help doctors make a comprehensive assessment and choose appropriate indications. In particular, digestive endoscopy with the support of modern equipment, flexible endoscopes with high-resolution cameras, magnifying hundreds of times helps experienced doctors quickly detect and cure patients at an early stage, avoiding cancer progression that affects the health and quality of life of patients.
