Trump increases tariffs on China, will impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico next week

US President Donald Trump said on February 27 that he would maintain plans to impose a 25% tax on Canada and Mexico, while increasing taxes by 10% on goods from China.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House, Mr. Trump said the new tariffs on Chinese goods would be added to the 10% tax that had been applied since February 4, meaning the US leader has added import taxes from China twice since taking office, Reuters reported.

In addition, Mr. Trump also announced that he would maintain the plan to impose a 25% tax on Canada and Mexico, expected to take effect from March 4. The new tax rate for China also took effect on the same day.

The tariffs are related to Mr. Trump’s stance on controlling the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. The White House boss postponed the tariffs on Mexico and Canada in early February, after the two countries pledged to strengthen border security.

However, in a post on the social network Truth Social on February 27, Mr. Trump stated that "drugs are still pouring into the US from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels," and criticized the two countries for not doing enough to control fentanyl. The US President emphasized that he would only postpone the imposition of tariffs if fentanyl smuggling activities stopped or were strictly controlled.

Canadian Public Safety Minister David McGuinty said on February 27 that the Trump administration was pleased with Canada’s efforts to beef up security at the US border and combat drug trafficking. Meanwhile, Mexico’s Economy Minister said he would meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Secretary of Economy Howard Lutnick this week to discuss tariffs.

On the Chinese side, the country sent a letter to Mr. Jamieson Greer, emphasizing that Beijing and Washington should resolve concerns in the economic and trade fields through equal dialogue and consultation, according to Reuters.

Experts fear that Trump's plan to impose tariffs next week will trigger a tariff confrontation, as countries may retaliate. China has imposed tariffs of up to 15% on many goods from the US after Washington imposed tariffs in early February. CNN reported on February 27 that Canada has launched many campaigns to strengthen border security and if this still does not satisfy the Trump administration, Ottawa will respond with tariffs targeting many key products that the US exports to Canada.
