Many private schools proactively plan their school year schedules, giving students extended breaks for New Year's Day or Lunar New Year.

Many private schools give students extended breaks

Currently, Hanoi has no specific instructions on the Lunar New Year holiday schedule for 2025. A representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the general spirit is that holidays and Tet holidays during the school year will be implemented according to the provisions of the 2019 Labor Code and annual guidance documents.

Announcing the holiday schedule early helps families proactively plan to return to their hometown or travel appropriately.

Some private schools have proactively developed their own school year schedules. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Marie Curie School (Hanoi), said that according to the school year plan that has been announced to parents from primary, secondary and high schools, all students in the school will have a 10-day Tet holiday from January 23 to February 1. According to the schedule, students will have an additional Sunday off, for a total of 11 days.

Many parents of this school shared that the Tet holiday schedule and other school year plans are clearly announced from the beginning of the school year, allowing families to proactively plan their trips back to their hometowns, travel, book tickets and rooms early to avoid difficulties and get better prices...

In addition to the "premium" international schools in Hanoi that have winter break according to the schedules of foreign students and teachers, in recent years many private schools or schools with foreign elements in Hanoi have also given students a break of about 10 days on Christmas and New Year's Day after the end of the first semester.

TH School gives students two weeks off, starting from December 20 to January 3. Some other schools such as Vinschools, Olympia, and Dewey also give students winter break and New Year's holiday from December 21 or 23, returning to school on January 1 or 2, 2025, depending on each school.

For public educational institutions, according to the 2024-2025 school year schedule for preschool education, general education and continuing education, Hanoi and most localities across the country will give students a 1-day New Year holiday (January 1, 2025).

Tet holiday takes into account the characteristics of students in each locality

For many years, the debate about increasing Tet holiday and reducing summer vacation for high school students has often "exploded" every time localities announce the Tet holiday schedule.

Recently, Ho Chi Minh City had to adjust the Lunar New Year holiday schedule by 2 more days than previously planned, for a total of 11 days, after parents said that the short break was not suitable for the conditions of parents who are workers from other provinces.

However, there are still opinions that the 11-day holiday is not enough because students living far away need to extend their vacation time after Tet, not before Tet, and children have to leave too early while their parents still have to go to work. After that, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City directed schools to be flexible and reasonable when students need to take more time off to return to their hometowns for Tet.

Yen Bai students have a 14-day Tet holiday, from the 23rd of the 12th lunar month to the 7th of the 1st lunar month. A representative of the provincial Department of Education and Training said that because the area has many ethnic minority students, the Tet holiday must be extended to accommodate the late Tet holiday custom of many different ethnic groups. If the Tet holiday is too short, students will skip school on their own, and teachers will have to go to each house to persuade them, which is very difficult.

Quang Ninh students have 13 days off for Tet (from the 28th of the 12th lunar month to the 11th of the 1st lunar month). Can Tho students have 12 days off for Tet, from the 23rd of the 12th lunar month to the 5th of the 1st lunar month. Tay Ninh students are expected to have 14 days off for Tet, from the 23rd of the 12th lunar month to the 7th of the 1st lunar month.

Notably, according to the 2024-2025 school year schedule in Kon Tum province, students will have 17 days off for Tet (official Tet holiday from December 25th to January 10th, if Saturday and Sunday are added, which fall on January 11th and January 12th, students will have a total of 17 days off)...
