Farmer Nguyen Nghia Dung, Pang Pe Nam village, Da Rsal commune, Dam Rong district currently has 7 hectares of durian. The durian area is planted in many different batches, the first batch of 4 hectares was planted 11 years ago, in 2013-2014. Before that, he was a farmer specializing in citrus trees including oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, fruit trees that also brought stable income. However, realizing the changing needs of consumers, Mr. Dung switched to cutting down oranges and tangerines, planting durian instead. In the remaining area, he maintains coffee planting and some experimental fruit trees.

Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung shared: “As farmers, we are determined to cultivate crops with high productivity and great economic value. As my family has realized, Da Rsal land is very suitable for durian trees and has quickly converted some of the old, diseased orange and tangerine areas to grow durian.”

Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung and his durian garden have been granted a growing area code.

Right from the beginning, when planting durian, Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung determined to grow on a large scale, cultivating pure gardens to have crops with uniform fruit. According to him, the larger the garden, the higher the yield, the easier it is for farmers to care for and consume. And, he chose the standard variety, which is the Thai Monthoong durian variety with yellow flesh and small seeds.

Ever since durians bore fruit, when there was no official export protocol to the Chinese market, Mr. Dung cultivated durians according to VietGAP standards.

“Growing durian trees according to VietGAP standards may take some time to update and monitor field diaries, and carefully record varieties, fertilizers, and pesticides, but in return, costs are reduced and the durian trees are healthy and have very good roots. My family strictly follows the VietGAP cultivation process according to the regulations of the Department of Agriculture, so when building the growing area code, it is very convenient, and there is almost no need to change the cultivation process much,” Mr. Dung commented.

According to Mr. Dung, the VietVAP cultivation process on durian trees is almost the same as the regulations in the Protocol for exporting fresh durian. In particular, when cultivating VietGAP, the soil in the durian garden is safe, has a rich beneficial microorganism system, helping to limit pests and diseases. Regulations such as not using herbicides, not spraying pesticides not listed, etc., Mr. Dung has long complied with, helping to keep the ecosystem in the garden safe. VietGAP cultivation creates favorable conditions for farmers to meet the requirements for cultivating durian for export.

In the 2024 durian crop, Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung's family has 4 hectares of durian trees bearing fruit, estimated to harvest 100 tons. The company has deposited this amount of fruit and will harvest it for export because the garden has been granted a growing area code, meeting export standards.

Mr. Dung said that he built a growing area code with the business and responded very quickly because he had had the VietGAP farming process for many years.

It is known that Mr. Dung has closed the sale of the durian garden at 81 thousand VND/kg, estimated to earn 8 billion VND. And from the following years, when the durian areas gradually enter the sustainable harvest stage, the output will gradually increase, the family income will also increase.

However, Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung will still maintain the coffee area next to the durian area. According to him, diversifying crops helps farmers feel safer and reduces the dependence on one type of crop. And, he will continue to replant citrus trees such as oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits because, according to him, the Da Rsal region is very suitable for citrus trees. The market for citrus trees is also very large and has a high demand. And of course, whether growing durian, coffee, or citrus trees, Mr. Dung still follows the VietGAP cultivation process, ensuring fruit quality as well as maintaining a sustainable environment.

Not only growing durian and coffee trees, Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung's family also opened a purchasing location, purchasing all the small durian areas of the villagers in the village and commune. He also supplies high-quality plant varieties as well as is willing to advise the villagers on plant care techniques with the goal of helping them grow together.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Suong - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Da Rsal commune assessed that Mr. Nguyen Nghia Dung is a good farmer, actively changing the structure of crops and livestock. He is also a person who is willing to apply new knowledge, modern, safe and environmentally friendly agricultural cultivation.

Currently, Mr. Dung's family and a number of durian growing households have been supported by the Commune Farmers' Association and the Department of Agriculture of Dam Rong District in training, granting VietGAP product certificates and aiming to register local OCOP products. Mr. Dung's family's durian acreage has also been granted a growing area code, a place to learn from the experiences of many farmers in the area, together building a sustainable fruit growing area for export.
