The global durian market is witnessing fierce competition, especially in China – the largest consumer market. Thailand, once the leading durian exporter, is facing many challenges. In 2024, Thailand exported 859,000 tons of durian, earning US$3.76 billion, but down 13% compared to 2023 (web ID: 16). The scandal of 64 tons of durian being returned by China due to contamination with Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) – a potentially carcinogenic dye – damaged Thailand’s reputation (web ID: 0). This led to Thailand destroying the shipment, suspending 26 export facilities, and implementing stricter control measures (web ID: 16, 20).
Meanwhile, Vietnam is emerging as a strong competitor. Vietnam’s durian exports to China increased sharply, reaching 432 million USD in the first 4 months of 2024, accounting for 57% of the market share (web ID: 9, 15). Vietnam’s advantages lie in the ability to harvest year-round, lower transportation costs, and competitive prices (web ID: 15).
