Reuters on March 13 quoted informed sources as saying that Russia has given the US a list of conditions to reach an agreement to end the conflict with Ukraine and re-establish relations with Washington.
It is not clear what Moscow has included in the list or whether Russia is willing to engage in peace talks with Ukraine before its list is accepted.
Russian and US officials have discussed the conditions for ending the conflict in face-to-face and online talks over the past three weeks, according to sources.
Sources described the Kremlin's conditions as wide-ranging and similar to those Russia has previously proposed to Ukraine, the United States and NATO.
Conditions previously set by Russia included Ukraine not joining NATO, not deploying foreign troops in Ukraine and recognizing the Crimean peninsula and four regions in Ukraine that Russia annexed as Russian territories.
In recent years, Russia has also demanded that the US and NATO address the "root causes" of the war, including NATO's eastward expansion.
US President Donald Trump is waiting for a response from Russian President Vladimir Putin on whether he will agree to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Washington and Kiev.
Mr Putin's commitment to a potential ceasefire remains uncertain, while the details of the deal have yet to be finalised.
Some US officials, lawmakers and experts fear that Russia will use the ceasefire to intensify its efforts to divide the US, Ukraine and Europe and make negotiations difficult.
In Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised this week’s meeting in Saudi Arabia between U.S. and Ukrainian officials as constructive, and said a potential 30-day ceasefire with Russia could be used to draft a broader peace deal.
The Kremlin said on March 12 that Russia needs to be briefed by the United States on the results of US-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia before commenting on whether Moscow will accept a ceasefire proposal.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said contacts with the US side were planned in the coming days, "during which Russia hopes to receive full information."
He did not rule out the possibility of a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, which could be held very quickly if necessary.
Experts say Russia is trying to secure the most favorable outcome for them to strengthen the Kremlin's position before starting negotiations.
President Putin is reportedly open to considering the idea of freezing the conflict with Ukraine but on condition that the deal takes into account Moscow's key demands.
Russia has repeatedly stated throughout the conflict that it is ready to engage in peace talks as long as "the realities on the ground" are taken into account, referring to four Ukrainian territories annexed to Russia following 2022 referendums.
Kiev does not recognize the results of the referendums, nor does it recognize the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. President Zelensky also banned any negotiations with the current Russian leadership, by presidential decree in 2022.
