Polish President Andrzej Duda has called on the US to move nuclear weapons to its territory as a deterrent amid concerns over Russia.

The Financial Times reported on March 13 that President Duda discussed this proposal with US Special Envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict Keith Kellogg.

"The borders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) moved east in 1999, so 26 years later, NATO's infrastructure also had to move east. For me, this is obvious," Mr. Duda said in the interview. Mr. Duda said it would be safer if nuclear weapons were available domestically.

On the same day, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he thought it was better to discuss such issues privately and secretly, but still insisted that President Duda acted with good intentions.

"We should build certain expectations... publicly when we are certain or have reason to believe that such calls will be heard and taken into account. In this case, the administration of US President Donald Trump is ready for a positive response," Tusk said.

Polish officials have previously said the country is ready to host US nuclear weapons. Polish policymakers have also recently expressed interest in an idea proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron to extend Paris's nuclear umbrella to European allies.

According to the Financial Times , Mr. Duda is hoping to revive the nuclear sharing project that he unsuccessfully proposed in 2022 to the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

Mr Duda's call for Poland to acquire nuclear weapons reflects growing anxiety in the country about Russia.

Poland currently spends more on defense than any other NATO member, according to Reuters. In 2024, Poland's defense spending reached 4.1% of GDP. The country plans to spend 4.7% of GDP on defense in 2025. President Duda has proposed enshrining defense spending of at least 4% of GDP in the Polish Constitution.
