(Dan Tri) - Russia's counterattack in Kursk puts Ukrainian forces there at risk of being surrounded.
Avia Pro, citing information from the Russian Defense Ministry and independent military analysts on January 28, said that during the counteroffensive campaign, Russia had recaptured more than 15 settlements in the Kursk province. Most recently, Russia recaptured the village of Nikolayevo-Daryino.
Ukraine launched an offensive against Kursk in August 2024. To date, Russia has recaptured about 70% of the Kursk territory controlled by Ukraine, about more than 800 square kilometers.
Russian troops continue to attack in the direction of the city of Sudzha, military experts say.
According to war correspondents, Russian units crossed the Psel River at a new location, pushed back Ukrainian forces from the vicinity of the Kolosok children's camp and approached the village of Guevo from the northeast.
It is expected that after retaking this settlement, the Russian army will block the Ukrainian supply routes from Yunkovka in the Sumy region to Sudzha. This will put the Ukrainian troops in this area at risk of being surrounded.
Meanwhile, speaking on January 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Ukrainian army is maintaining a buffer zone in Kursk to protect Sumy and Kharkov from Russian attacks.
