Postpone class start time

On the morning of January 23, according to information from the morning weather report in the Good Morning program on VTV1 channel of Vietnam Television , the temperature in Hanoi was 9.9 degrees Celsius. Based on the regulations of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, kindergartens and primary schools in the city simultaneously announced that parents should not send their children to school, and keep them at home to ensure their health.

The days of severe cold in highland areas such as Meo Vac District (Ha Giang) will be more frequent and last longer than in the plains, so school closures according to the weather are set but not too rigid.

Many young families in Hanoi with children in preschool and primary school have had to come up with a plan since last weekend to take care of their children if they stay home from school to avoid the cold while their parents go to work. There are jobs that allow flexibility in asking permission from the office to work from home, but most have to have grandparents from the countryside come to look after them or assign them to take leave...

Understanding this difficulty of parents, many schools in Hanoi still maintain opening to welcome students, but will delay the start of classes by 1 hour compared to the usual schedule. Ms. Vu Ngoc Du, Principal of Anh Sao Kindergarten (Cau Giay District, Hanoi), said that although the school announced that children were off, on the morning of January 23, more than 190/730 children still came to school. The school has adequate facilities, classrooms have 2-way air conditioning, hot water heaters, and hot water dispensers. The school's board of directors also noted that students' meals must be hot and nutritious. The activities of picking up children on cold days still take place normally so that parents can rest assured.

The North is immersed in freezing cold, people absolutely do nothing?

At Kindergarten A (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi), the principal said that there have been a series of solutions to cope: the school has postponed the morning pick-up time from 8am to 7am as usual, and the pick-up time has also been extended; the drop-off time has not changed, creating conditions for parents to work with peace of mind. On days when the outside temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius, if parents have to go to work and cannot take their children to school at the above time, the school will still open according to the old school hours to pick up children.

For non-public schools, this flexibility is more obvious. A series of schools such as Marie Curie, Olympia, Nguyen Sieu, Le Quy Don, Ly Thai To... all announced that they would still welcome students to school as usual and have plans to ensure health and prevent cold for students if parents need to send their children. Students go to school by shuttle bus, there is a heating system in the classroom, and the boarding menu is also adjusted accordingly to ensure the health of students. Therefore, these schools said that the number of students and learning routine on January 23 did not change significantly.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training said it will continue to monitor the situation and direct education and training departments to strengthen inspections and monitoring of teaching and student care during the coming days of severe cold.

Flexible leave for students

According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Lao Cai province, as of the morning of January 23, Bac Ha district and Sa Pa town have allowed students to stay home from school to fight the cold. Specifically, in Sa Pa town, 17/59 schools with 7,402 students were absent. In Bac Ha district, there are 12 schools with 3,624 students. The Department of Education and Training requires educational institutions to regularly monitor and grasp the weather situation and develop plans to prevent cold for students.

In Bac Giang, most kindergartens and primary schools let students take a day off on January 23. However, depending on the conditions of each place, schools are also flexible in opening to receive and take care of children if parents need to send their children. For example, in Viet Yen Town (Bac Giang), because parents have to go to work, many families around the Quang Chau, Van Trung, and Dinh Tram industrial parks still need to send their children. Therefore, kindergartens have proactively checked windows, laid carpets, and equipped heating lamps in bedrooms and classrooms to ensure a warm space for students.

Many kindergartens in Bac Giang City (Bac Giang Province) with adequate facilities have proactively turned on two-way air conditioning to warm up students. Or in Son Dong District (Bac Giang), some kindergarten and primary school students are still brought to school by their parents. Before winter, the Son Dong District Education and Training Department connected with philanthropists and businesses to mobilize sponsorship of 100 beds for boarding students at disadvantaged schools.

Sharing about the story of coping with the cold weather, Mr. Bui Van Thu, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Meo Vac District (Ha Giang), said that on January 23, the temperature in the mountainous areas of the district dropped to about 2 - 3 degrees Celsius. The days of cold weather in the highlands will be more frequent and last longer than in the plains, so school closures according to the weather are also set but not too rigid. The characteristics of the schools here, most of the students are boarding at the school, so the decision to let students take time off or study is very flexible. If the classroom is windproof and the students wear enough warm clothes, the school will continue to maintain the study. On the contrary, the schools can let students stay in the boarding room and ensure that their meals and accommodation are suitable for the weather.

According to Mr. Thu, the reality is that most students in Meo Vac district will be warmer and have more nutritious food when they go to school than at home. In recent years, many charitable organizations and individuals across the country have donated blankets, coats, and warm towels to schools, so no school has students suffering from the cold anymore. Some schools have received up to 5 different winter coats.

"On the morning of January 23, I inspected some schools and found that although the temperature outside was very low, the classrooms and student dormitories were still warm. The students were dressed warmly, wearing woolen hats and shoes and socks. There was no longer the barefoot, breezy scene of children in the highlands like before," said Mr. Thu.
