8.8% of children under 5 years old are stunted

Hanoi City has implemented an intervention model to prevent overweight and obesity at three primary schools: Le Loi (Ha Dong), Nguyen Du (Hoan Kiem), and La Thanh (Dong Da) and has assessed the nutritional status of 3,600 students.

In 2024, the community nutrition improvement activity organized 32 training courses (800 health workers attended) on preventing stunting for students aged 5-19.

Hanoi CDC investigated and evaluated the knowledge and practices of 1,600 parents with overweight and obese children and 250 teachers and kitchen staff of 3 primary schools.

The result is that the rate of overweight and obese students is 43.2% (Nguyen Du school 45.9%; Le Loi school 43.7%; La Thanh school 34.9%), and the rate of malnourished students is 3.1%.

The model has organized training for 105 health workers on methods of assessing nutritional status for primary school students; individual counseling skills for overweight and obese students. CDC Hanoi organized nutrition communication and advocacy for preventing overweight and obesity in students for teachers, school meal preparers, and parents of overweight and obese children at 3 schools.

Based on the survey results, the model conducted counseling interventions for parents and students at Le Loi School, La Thanh whose children were overweight or obese, and at the same time supervised and provided professional support for individual nutrition counseling at primary schools.

In 2024, Hanoi CDC investigated and assessed the nutritional status of children under 5 years old and surveyed the chronic energy deficiency of women of childbearing age in 60 clusters of 30 districts, towns and cities with 3,060 mother-child pairs participating. The results showed that the rate of malnutrition in children under 5 years old with underweight was 4.8%, stunting was 8.8%, wasting was 4.6% and the rate of overweight and obesity was 5.9%.

Hanoi CDC coordinated with localities to successfully organize the Micronutrient Day campaign in June and December with the rate of children aged 6-35 months receiving vitamin A reaching 99.9%. In the first phase of the Micronutrient Day campaign, 607,437 children under 5 years old were weighed and measured to assess the malnutrition rate. The results showed that the rate of underweight malnutrition was 6.6%, stunting was 9.8%, wasting was 0.3% and overweight and obesity was 1.1%.

By 2025, the city will implement 5 goals to improve nutritional status:

First goal: implement a diverse and appropriate diet for all ages and subjects according to the life cycle with a specific target of maintaining 78% of children aged 6-23 months receiving proper complementary feeding.

Second objective: improve the nutritional status of mothers, children and adolescents by controlling the malnutrition rate in children under 5 years of age for stunting at 9.7%; underweight at 6.5%; and wasting at 1.5%.

Third objective: control overweight and obesity to prevent chronic non-communicable diseases and related risk factors in children, adolescents and adults. Maintain the implementation of the overweight and obesity prevention intervention model at 3 primary schools in Dong Da, Hoan Kiem and Ha Dong districts.

Fourth target: improve micronutrient deficiencies in children, adolescents and women of childbearing age with the target of over 80% of women receiving iron supplements during pregnancy; over 99.8% of children aged 6-35 months receiving high-dose Vitamin A.

Fifth objective: Implement nutritional interventions for acutely malnourished children, children under 16 years old in poor, near-poor, newly escaped poverty households, ethnic minorities and mountainous areas with the target of 100% of commune, ward and town health stations screening and managing children aged 0-72 months with acute malnutrition...
