On August 23, speaking with Thanh Nien reporter, a leader of Nam Dinh Provincial People's Committee said that an individual was discovered cutting down many mangrove trees in Con Lu area (in Giao Lac commune, bordering Giao Xuan commune, located in the ecological restoration subdivision managed by Xuan Thuy National Park).
Mangrove trees were cut down and destroyed by Mr. Nguyen Van Phe.
Specifically, on the afternoon of August 22, a working delegation including leaders of Giao Lac Commune People's Committee (Giao Thuy District), representatives of Xuan Thuy National Park, representatives of Ba Lat Forest Protection Department and Border Guard made a record of the current status in the Con Lu area.

Here, the working group discovered that Mr. Nguyen Van Phe (50 years old, residing in Dong Nhat area, Ngo Dong town, Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province) arbitrarily mobilized sand suction machines to renovate the beach and cut down casuarina and mangrove trees, so they made a record and requested to stop the violation.
Through counting, the authorities determined that 50 mangrove trees were cut down, covering an area of about 240 square meters, many bamboo poles with wires stretched across the sand dune area about 100 meters long, a newly built watchtower, and 9 concrete pillars about 4-5 meters high.

At the border area between Giao Lac and Giao Xuan communes, the working group discovered a sand suction machine that was not working, had no one watching it, and had a sand suction hole about 2 meters deep.
Continuing the inspection, the authorities discovered that also in Giao Xuan commune, about 1 km to the west, there was a sand suction pit about 500 m2 wide and about 1.5 m deep; there were two sand suction machines that were not working and there was no one guarding them.
The working group has made a record of the current situation of the incident and reported to the authorities for coordination and handling.
Arbitrary renovation of alluvial land and sand pumping have changed the environmental landscape.
Notably, this is not the first time Mr. Nguyen Van Phe has violated the law. Previously, on June 7, the above-mentioned working group inspected the Con Lu area and discovered the case of sand dredging to renovate the beach and cutting down casuarina and mangrove trees there, which Mr. Phe directed some people to do.
The working group determined that the total area of deforested trees was about 460 m2 of regenerated mangrove forest, about 4,000 m2 of casuarina trees and about 4,220 m2 of alluvial land that had been illegally renovated at the Con Lu Ecological Restoration Sub-area of Xuan Thuy National Park.
The Director of Xuan Thuy National Park determined that Mr. Nguyen Van Phe's arbitrary renovation of the alluvial land and sand pumping had changed the environmental landscape of Xuan Thuy National Park.
Xuan Thuy National Park requests the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nam Dinh province to pay attention to directing the departments, offices, and specialized agencies of the department to coordinate with the People's Committee of Giao Thuy district to continue investigating, verifying and clarifying violations and strictly handling them according to the provisions of law.
