Residents of the Shejaia neighborhood of Gaza City said they were surprised to hear tanks approaching and opening fire in the early afternoon, along with drone strikes following overnight bombing of Gaza City.
Most residents of Gaza City, where Israel began its military campaign and once controlled the entirety of it, have been displaced multiple times during the fighting. They fled to the south of the territory to escape the bombardment, only recently returning home at the request of Israeli forces. And now they are being forced to flee again.

“It seems like the war is starting again, a series of bombings destroyed several houses in our area and shook the buildings,” said Mohammad Jamal, 25, a resident of Gaza City.
Late Thursday, the Palestinian Civil Emergency Authority said Israeli airstrikes had killed at least seven people in Shejaia so far. It added that many more casualties were under the rubble where rescue teams could not reach.
The Islamic Jihad militant group in Gaza said it detonated a pre-made explosive device targeting an Israeli tank in the eastern district.
Israel accused rebels of hiding among civilians and said it warned those displaced to stay away from its operations against the militants.
An Israeli airstrike hit the headquarters of the Palestinian Civilian Emergency Service in the Al-Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip just before midnight, killing three members of the service, bringing the number of staff killed by Israeli fire to 74 since October 7, the rescue service said.
In Rafah in southern Gaza, where tanks have entered several neighborhoods since May 7, doctors said four Palestinians were killed by tank fire landing in the western part of the city, where Israeli troops have stepped up infiltration in recent days.
More than eight months after Israel's war in Gaza, aid officials say the enclave remains at high risk of famine, with nearly half a million people facing "catastrophic" food insecurity.
“We are starving in Gaza City and being chased by tanks and planes with no hope that this war will end,” said Jamal.
