On the evening of February 22, the final round of the English debate contest "THedu English Rising Stars Contest" took place enthusiastically, revolving around many hot topics for students today: the benefits and harms of using social networks; banning extra tutoring for primary school students.
4 excellent candidates surpassed 100 candidates and divided into pairs to debate on the 2 hot topics above.
The debate of two students Hoang Ngoc Dong Phuong and Dang Minh Hoa (both 5th graders) surprised the judges.
The debate revolved around the issue of "Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training regulating extra teaching and learning does not allow extra teaching for primary school students (except in some special cases)", while Dong Phuong said that it is difficult for primary school students to study alone after school hours, Dang Minh Hoa completely opposed.
Minh Hoa thinks that extra classes are unnecessary because they put economic pressure on parents and waste time taking them to and from school.
"Why do we have to pay for extra classes when the Internet can help us learn by ourselves? Nowadays, there are many tools for students to learn math, Vietnamese, English... for free.
I think teachers should also change their teaching methods, trying to convey all the knowledge to students right in class so that they don't have to worry about going to extra classes," Minh Hoa said.

Sharing about extra classes, Minh Hoa said that although she is a 5th grader, she has used many learning methods to improve her skills so she doesn't have to go to extra classes.
Dong Phuong said that although she does not study directly at the centers, she still improves her math and Vietnamese skills by taking online courses. As for English, she takes extra classes to become better at the necessary skills...
Commenting on the students' English debate on the hot topic of "Circular 29 regulating extra teaching and learning", English master Ngo Duy Phuc - lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City Open University - one of the judges of the contest - said that the students' ability surprised him.
"Students today are very sensitive to social issues and are well-trained in skills, including English skills, as well as expressing in-depth opinions despite their young age. This makes me extremely happy," Mr. Phuc emphasized.
In the end, the first prize went to Dang Minh Hoa and the second prize went to Nguyen Nguyen Khang. The two third prizes went to Pham Tran Y Nhi and Hoang Ngoc Dong Phuong.
