Perfecting the process of processing off-season flowering of durian trees

Việt NamViệt Nam22/03/2025

- In the Mekong Delta, the main durian season usually falls in the third and fourth lunar months, coinciding with the harvest season in Thailand, causing prices to drop due to abundant supply. Meanwhile, if we proactively handle off-season flowering and harvest around the eleventh lunar month or after Tet (January and February of the lunar calendar), durian prices can be 1.5 - 2 times higher due to scarce supply. This helps farmers optimize profits and contribute to market balance, improving economic efficiency.

The project “Application and improvement of the off-season flowering process for Ri-6 and Dona durian trees in An Giang province” was carried out to provide farmers with technical guidance on controlling the off-season flowering process for durian trees. The application of the off-season flowering process not only improves fruit yield and quality, increases income for durian growers, but also promotes eco-tourism development, local economic development and sustainable environmental protection.

The project aims to build 2 models for off-season flowering treatment for durian trees, each model is implemented on an area of 3,000m2 , in Cho Moi district, implemented on Ri-6 durian variety and in Chau Phu district, implemented on Dona durian variety. The productivity of Ri-6 and Dona durian gardens reaches 10 tons/ha/year (trees from 6 to 8 years old), the rate of fruit reaching grade A is over 70%. The economic efficiency of the off-season flowering treatment model increases by 10% compared to the model of farmers implementing off-season flowering treatment themselves.

To effectively implement the model, the implementation location was selected at 2 typical durian farming households: Mr. Ly Van Doan's household (Long Kien commune, Cho Moi district), with an area of 3,000m² specializing in growing Ri-6 durian and Mr. Tran Van Thao's household (Binh Chanh commune, Chau Phu district), with 3,000m² specializing in growing Dona durian. The gardens of the selected households have durian trees about 6 years old, ensuring suitable growing conditions and convenient traffic conditions, facilitating monitoring, evaluation and model replication.

After nearly 1 year of testing (from April 2024 to March 2025), the results of the Ri-6 durian model showed that the flowering rate reached 94%, and that of the Dona variety reached 90%. The yield of the Ri-6 durian variety reached 13.8 tons/ha, and that of the Dona durian variety reached 18.1 tons/ha. The Ri-6 and Dona durian varieties had a 70% rate of grade A durian fruit (fruits from 1.8 to 5.2 kg). The model brought high economic efficiency, with a profit of 523.6 million VND/ha/year for the Ri-6 durian variety in Cho Moi district and nearly 976 million VND/ha/year for the Dona durian variety in Chau Phu district.

From the effectiveness of the model, the Department of Science and Technology (KH&CN) recommends that the off-season flowering treatment process for Ri-6 durian and Dona durian varieties achieves high productivity and a high rate of grade A fruits, so it should be widely replicated. The off-season flowering treatment process helps people access and apply scientific and technological advances in life, improving production efficiency. Thereby, increasing farmers' income to develop the family and local economy, forming specialized areas, creating momentum to promote the development of the province's agriculture.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, durian is a popular fruit tree in Southeast Asia, due to its delicious flavor, high nutritional value and is a highly effective fruit tree that is being developed strongly. Therefore, durian is known as the "king of fruits". The locality with the largest durian growing area is Cho Moi and Chau Phu districts. The Ri 6 durian variety has been grown the longest and accounts for the largest proportion; the Dona durian has only recently been developed.

Evaluating the effectiveness of the fruit tree models being implemented, durian is a fruit tree with potential for development in An Giang. In addition to encouraging the conversion of crop varieties, the province focuses on transferring science and technology for farmers to apply in production. In some provinces in the Mekong Delta, techniques for handling off-season durian have been applied, limiting the situation of "good harvest, low price" and many people have become millionaires from durian specialized gardens. By handling off-season and spreading out the crop, farmers reduce the pressure on the season, focus on caring for and developing the area of gardens specializing in this specialty crop.

According to the survey results of effective agricultural models, growing durian in Cho Moi and Chau Phu districts brings high economic efficiency. Currently, durian farmers in the two localities often produce fruit at the right harvest season. A few farmers apply the technique of off-season flowering, but due to learning from relatives and the Internet..., the effectiveness of off-season flowering for durian is not high.

Currently, the eco-tourism model combining sightseeing and enjoying fruits in the garden, especially durian gardens, is developing strongly. This requires durian gardens to have fruits all year round to attract tourists. Therefore, perfecting the process of off-season flowering for Ri-6 and Dona durian varieties, then transferring it to farmers, is a necessary solution and needs to be replicated to meet market demand, increase economic value and develop sustainably.
