Google is reportedly testing a new ad technology on YouTube that could render ad blockers useless.
Google's new technology is said to use server-side ad insertion, making it difficult for traditional ad blockers to detect and block.

Some Reddit users have reported encountering videos that are all black and cannot be skipped, likely because the ads are blocked but are still displayed as blank videos.
Google also announced it was “upgrading safety standards for YouTube browser extensions,” though it did not specifically mention blocking ads.
The tech giant’s move is seen as a significant step in the increasingly tense battle between YouTube and ad blockers. Previously, Google intentionally slowed down video loading if it detected ad blockers.
“Google is tweaking its algorithms more frequently than ever. Because of the frequency with which YouTube’s ad delivery system changes, developers are having to change their software on a daily basis,” said Krzysztof Modras, engineering director of the Ghostery extension.
Previously, many users also reported that their videos encountered a lack of sound when using ad blockers on YouTube. Even when the volume bar was raised to the highest level, the video would still automatically mute afterwards.
"Ad blockers violate YouTube's terms of service. We also encourage users to support the creators they love by enabling ads or using YouTube Premium," YouTube said.
Google did not directly deny the allegations that it was making it difficult for users to watch videos using ad blockers. The company said the issue was due to “an unrelated effort to improve YouTube’s performance and reliability.”
Google’s changes make sense, as the majority of YouTube and its creators’ revenue comes from advertising, and limiting the impact of ad blockers will help the company operate more efficiently.
If Google's new ad technology is successful, it could spark a major debate about users' right to control their video viewing experiences and influence the development of future ad blockers.
