DNVN - On January 23, 2025, domestic coffee prices increased sharply, reaching an average of VND 122,300/kg, an increase of VND 2,100/kg compared to the previous day. Pepper prices, after a series of flat days, increased slightly by VND 500/kg in some provinces.
Coffee prices spike
At the end of the trading session on January 23, 2025 on the London floor, Robusta coffee prices continued to set a new peak in nearly a year, with an increase ranging from 152 to 189 USD/ton compared to the previous session. Specifically recorded prices: March 2025 term is 5,452 USD/ton (up 189 USD/ton), May 2025 is 5,388 USD/ton (up 171 USD/ton), July 2025 is 5,296 USD/ton (up 160 USD/ton) and September 2025 is 5,199 USD/ton (up 152 USD/ton).
On the New York floor, Arabica coffee prices also increased sharply, with an increase of 12.80 to 14.05 cents/lb. Specifically, the March 2025 futures recorded 341.85 cents/lb (up 14.05 cents/lb), May 2025 reached 337.85 cents/lb (up 13.90 cents/lb), July 2025 was 331.15 cents/lb (up 13.45 cents/lb), and September 2025 reached 322.00 cents/lb (up 12.80 cents/lb).
Arabica coffee prices from Brazil are also not out of the upward trend, with an increase of 2.60 to 17.80 USD/ton. Specific prices: March 2025 is 420.50 USD/ton (up 2.60 USD/ton), May 2025 is 414.00 USD/ton (up 13.00 USD/ton), July 2025 is 413.65 USD/ton (up 17.80 USD/ton), and September 2025 is 397.10 USD/ton (up 13.80 USD/ton).
Domestic coffee prices on the morning of January 23, 2025 increased by an average of VND 2,100/kg, reaching VND 122,300/kg. The Central Highlands recorded the highest price of VND 122,500/kg. Specifically, coffee prices in Dak Lak and Gia Lai increased by VND 2,200/kg to VND 122,200/kg, in Lam Dong reached VND 121,500/kg (up VND 2,200/kg) and in Dak Nong reached VND 122,500/kg (up VND 2,000/kg).
The Vietnam Commodity Exchange (MXV) commented that Robusta prices increased due to the negative supply outlook and the sharp decrease in the USD/BRL exchange rate.
News that the new US administration under President Donald Trump has not yet imposed strict tariff measures has caused the Real to appreciate and the USD to weaken.
In the most recent trading session, the USD/BRL exchange rate decreased by 0.64% to 6.03 points. This caused Brazilian farmers to limit sales, leading to a decrease in coffee export supply.
Pepper prices increased slightly in some localities.
Updated at 5:00 a.m. on January 23, 2025, domestic pepper prices increased slightly by VND 500/kg in some localities after many stable sessions, reaching an average of VND 147,100/kg.
Pepper prices in Gia Lai remained stable at VND147,000/kg. Meanwhile, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Dak Lak recorded an increase of VND500/kg, reaching VND146,500/kg and VND147,500/kg, respectively. In Binh Phuoc and Dak Nong, pepper prices remained stable at VND147,000/kg and VND147,500/kg.
In the international market, according to the International Pepper Community (IPC), pepper prices in different countries have been adjusted in opposite directions. Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices increased by 20 USD/ton to 7,135 USD/ton, while Muntok white pepper reached 9,427 USD/ton (up 26 USD/ton). Malaysia maintained stable prices, with ASTA black pepper reaching 9,000 USD/ton and ASTA white pepper at 11,600 USD/ton.
In contrast, Brazilian pepper prices fell by about $50 per ton, currently at $6,100 per ton. Vietnam’s pepper exports remained stable, with black pepper prices of 500g/l and 550g/l reaching $6,350 per ton and $6,650 per ton, respectively. White pepper exports remained at $9,550 per ton.
Assessing pepper exports in 2024, Mr. Ho Tri Nhuan, Director of Gohan Company Limited, said: "In 2024, US pepper demand is expected to increase by only 5%, but importers have increased purchases by 30-40% due to concerns about high prices."
Farmers and stockpilers benefited from selling pepper at high prices early in the season. However, some businesses that signed long-term contracts suffered losses when pepper prices skyrocketed at the time of delivery.
