Currently, the price of live pigs in Hung Yen province is being purchased at 70,000 - 74,000 VND/kg. The high selling price pushes up the price of commercial pork and breeding pigs...
At the end of 2024, the average price of live pigs in the province was 63,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, which is considered good, meeting the profit expectations of farmers. At the time of Lunar New Year, the price of live pigs increased slightly, around 66,000 - 68,000 VND/kg. Normally, this is the time when the demand for pork increases, causing prices to increase. After Tet, the demand decreases, and the price of pigs returns to normal.
However, this year, after Tet, the price of live pigs has been increasing continuously. Currently, traders buy live pigs from farmers' farms at a price of 70,000 - 74,000 VND/kg. Accordingly, each kg of live pigs has increased by 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year.
Excited about having just sold 2 tons of live pigs at a price of 73,000 VND/kg, Mr. Bui Van Tham in Hai Thang commune (Tien Lu) said that with this price, his family earned a profit of over 2 million VND/pig. Mr. Tham shared: My family regularly raises 5 sows and over 100 pigs. This is the highest profit in the past 2-3 years. With this price, my family can rest assured to maintain production, while focusing on activities to care for and prevent diseases for the livestock.
The increase in live hog prices has pushed up the price of commercial meat in the markets. According to a survey, up to now, the price of pork in the local markets ranges from 130,000 - 160,000 VND/kg; the price of pork in clean food stores and supermarkets ranges from 170,000 - 200,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Thanh, a pork trader at An Vi market (Khoai Chau) said: Since the Lunar New Year, the price of live pigs has increased sharply, so the price of pork from slaughterhouses has also increased. The price of meat has increased, but consumer purchasing power has slowed down, decreasing slightly compared to before. Because pork is expensive, many people are considering switching to other types of food.
Ms. Mung in Hien Nam Ward (Hung Yen City) said: Since the full moon of January until now, when going to the market to buy meat, traders have continuously announced that the purchase price of live pigs has increased, so they have adjusted the selling price to increase by 10,000 - 20,000 VND/kg of meat or ham, sausage. Therefore, I have calculated and chosen to buy alternative foods to ensure my family's spending.
After the Lunar New Year and the Full Moon Festival, farmers, farms and ranches in the province are actively restocking their herds to serve the market. Demand is high, breeding pigs in localities in the province are in short supply, increasing prices... Currently, the price of gilts sold on the market is 10 - 12 million VND/head, 2 - 3 million VND/head higher than the same period last year. The price of breeding pigs has also increased to 2.2 - 2.4 million VND/head, an increase of about 800,000 VND/head compared to the same period last year.
Pig prices are high and pig farms are not able to supply enough pigs to the market. Many farmers say that it is currently difficult to buy piglets. Many households have even paid a deposit a month in advance but have not yet received piglets to restore their herds.
Ms. Le Thi Hong, owner of a closed pig farm in Phung Hung commune (Khoai Chau) said: My family's farm regularly raises 200 pigs and 50 sows, both proactively providing breeding pigs for the family and supplying to the people. On average, I sell from 100 to 200 breeding pigs per month. With the current average selling price of 2.4 million VND/pig, the profit is about 1.2 million VND/pig. The profit is quite high, however, at this time, the number of breeding pigs on the farm is not enough to meet the needs of farmers in the area.
According to the assessment of professional agencies, the recent increase in live pig prices is due to many reasons, mainly due to the decrease in supply because many pig farmers sold their pigs before Tet; the impact of natural disasters has caused damage to the number of livestock. In addition, in recent years, due to the impact of epidemics, high feed prices have caused farmers to suffer losses, many households have switched to raising other types of livestock or reduced their herds...
According to data from the Department of Animal Husbandry, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, currently, the total herd of pigs in the province is about 518,000, an increase of 0.2% over the same period last year. After the sale of pigs during the Lunar New Year and the Full Moon Festival of January, currently, households, farms and ranches are actively re-herding and increasing their herds to serve the market. However, according to the recommendations of professional agencies, farmers should be careful in calculating the increase and re-herding of pigs to avoid risks. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on caring for, raising and applying biosafety measures for pig herds at facilities and households to ensure biosafety conditions for pig farming; carry out vaccination, disinfection and sterilization of barns and livestock periodically according to regulations to be proactive in disease prevention and control for livestock; carry out animal quarantine and slaughter control well; Control transportation well to protect livestock activities in the province and ensure food safety.
