On the evening of March 12, US East Coast time (morning of March 13, Vietnam time), former President Donald Trump won the Republican primary election held in the form of secret ballots in the states of Georgia, Mississippi and Washington, before the results were announced in the state of Hawaii.
With this result, the total number of delegates that Mr. Trump has obtained is 1,228 votes, exceeding the 1,215 votes needed to win the Republican nomination.
Preliminary vote counts showed that Mr. Trump won 84.5% of the vote in Georgia, temporarily winning 56/59 delegates from this southeastern state. In Mississippi, Mr. Trump won 92.6% of the vote and won all 40 delegates from this southern state. In Washington, Mr. Trump won 74.2% of the vote and won all 43 delegates from this northwestern state.
Meanwhile, incumbent President Joe Biden has also won enough delegates to become the Democratic presidential candidate, after winning the primary election in Georgia.
With more than 2,000 delegates after the initial results of the Georgia primary election on the evening of March 12 local time, Mr. Biden has surpassed the required 1,968 votes out of a total of 3,934 delegates, enough delegates to represent the Democratic Party in the US presidential election in November. Incumbent President Biden also won the primaries in Mississippi and Washington.
Thus, current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have won enough delegates to become the presidential candidates of each party to participate in the race to become the owner of the White House next November.
This year's race for the White House is almost certain to be a two-horse race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. This will be the first rematch between the two presidential candidates since 1956.
