Trump will not resume military aid to Ukraine despite mineral deal

US President Donald Trump has reportedly told aides that a mineral deal between Washington and Kyiv is not enough to resume aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

According to NBC News citing US officials, President Trump wants the US to receive a portion of the rights to Ukraine's natural resources in a potential mineral deal.

In addition, the US leader also wants to see a change in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's stance in peace negotiations, including a willingness to make concessions such as giving up some territory to Russia. Mr. Trump also wants Mr. Zelensky to consider resigning and holding elections in Ukraine.

Elections in Ukraine have been suspended under the country's constitutional provision on martial law, which has been in effect since Russia launched a special military operation in 2022.

Asked about Trump's demands, White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said: "As President Trump demonstrated by reading President Zelensky's message at the joint session, the Ukrainians have made positive moves. With the upcoming meetings in Saudi Arabia, we look forward to hearing more positive signals, hoping to finally end this bloody conflict."

US and Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on March 11 to discuss ways to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. According to Reuters, the US plans to use the meeting to determine whether Ukraine is willing to make concessions to Russia to end the conflict.

As the U.S. halted equipment and intelligence sharing, Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine. U.S. officials say they have seen no indication that the pause in intelligence sharing directly affected the Russian attacks. U.S. officials say the major attacks were likely planned before the U.S. intelligence and aid to Ukraine were cut off.

Republicans in the US Congress are pressing the White House to restart both aid and intelligence to Ukraine. US officials have expressed optimism that weapons, equipment and intelligence sharing could be restored as early as this week, especially after Mr Zelensky said Ukraine was “ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible”.

US officials said Washington still shares defensive intelligence with Ukraine to help it defend itself against attacks, as the US has a warning obligation. However, the US has stopped providing Ukraine with target coordinates for attacks on Russian positions.

US cuts off intelligence, Ukraine worried

The United States has provided Ukraine with targeting information, satellite imagery and signals intelligence for three years of fighting. European allies are now working to fill the gap, but the lack of US intelligence still has a significant impact on Kyiv on a daily basis. “Every day that passes hurts Ukraine, but every day that passes gives Russia a better position,” said one Western official.
