Landslides increase after storm number 3
Speaking with Giao thong Newspaper reporters, Mr. Ngo Viet Dong, Head of the Economic Department of Do Son District, said that after storm No. 3 made landfall and the recent days of heavy rain, many areas along hills and mountains in the district suffered landslides.
According to statistics, there are currently a total of 17 landslides in Do Son district, affecting people's lives and activities.
A landslide in Van Huong ward, Do Son district caused many graves to be lost and houses to be severely damaged.
"Some landslides were serious, causing houses to be completely damaged. Some landslides also caused graves on the hills to be swept away by the soil and lost and have not been found. The locality with the largest number of landslides is Van Huong ward with 10 points, followed by Hai Son ward with 6 points and Ngoc Xuyen ward with 1 landslide point," said Mr. Dong.
Through many years of experience living in the locality, Mr. Dinh Van Tan, in Do Son district, said that the hills and mountains in the district have low connectivity, high slopes, and many "orphaned" rocks and soil, so they are prone to landslides.
The increase in landslides after storm No. 3 was due to the record storm intensity in the past 30 years, the large number of broken trees, and prolonged heavy rains that reduced connectivity.
According to the reporter's records, there were places where large boulders weighing tens of cubic meters rolled down the road. Fortunately, there were no casualties because people had been evacuated in advance or there were no people there at the time of the landslide.
Quickly overcome landslides
Mr. Ngo Viet Dong said that before storm No. 3, after reviewing and assessing areas at risk of landslides, the People's Committee of Do Son district and the People's Committees of wards in the area promptly moved households living in dangerous areas to safe shelters.
Thanks to that, although landslides occurred in many places, many houses collapsed completely and were partially damaged, but there were no human casualties.
Landslides buried many houses, forcing dozens of households to evacuate and take shelter at relatives' houses or at locations arranged by local authorities.
Mr. Dinh Xuan Thuy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Van Huong Ward, Do Son District, said that the ward had 4 households whose houses collapsed due to landslides.
Before storm No. 3 made landfall and heavy rain followed the storm, through screening, the ward promptly mobilized and evacuated dozens of people from areas at risk of landslides in the area.
Currently, in Van Huong ward, there are 42 households that have not lost their homes but are at risk of landslides, collapses, and burials, making it impossible to continue living.
According to information from the People's Committee of Do Son District, many households whose houses were damaged by landslides have been given shelter by nearby residents. A few people have had to seek support from local authorities to arrange temporary accommodation to gradually stabilize their lives.
Leaders of Van Huong ward directly went to households in areas at risk of landslides during storm No. 3 to encourage people to move to safe shelters.
To solve the problem of handling landslides and ensure people can return to live safely, a team of experts from the University of Mining and Geology has conducted a survey at 17 landslides in the three wards of Ngoc Xuyen, Van Huong, and Hai Son.
After surveying and collecting data and information, in the coming time, the delegation will provide advice and propose solutions to the district government on how to ensure long-term stability and safety for the people.
In the immediate future, through the support of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hai Phong City, Do Son District has provided support to build new houses for 12 households (4 of which collapsed due to landslides), each household receiving 100 million VND. In addition, 33 households received 20 million VND/household to support house repair.
At landslide sites, the locality has put up warning ropes, mobilized and propagated people living in the above areas not to return home to ensure safety before the repair is completed.
