On the evening of March 25, the Vietnamese team had a resounding 5-0 victory over Laos in the opening match of the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup.
Vietnam team has moved up in FIFA rankings in the upcoming update.
This victory not only helped coach Kim Sang-sik and his team have a good start in the Asian qualifiers but also brought good news for the Vietnamese team on the FIFA rankings.
Specifically, during the FIFA Days in March 2025, the "Golden Star Warriors" had two victories against Cambodia (2-1) and Laos (5-0).
These two wins brought the Vietnamese team 8.91 points. In the 2024 AFF Cup campaign, the team also accumulated an additional 10.22 points.
Thus, the total points accumulated by the Vietnamese team in the two most recent gatherings is 19.03 points, bringing the team's total points to 1,183.82 points.
In the next update (expected on April 3, 2025), the Vietnamese team will increase 5 places, from 114th to 109th in the world.
Under coach Park Hang-seo, the Vietnamese team was once in the world's top 100. But when coach Troussier took over, the team was pushed out of the top 100. At one point, the red-shirted army even ranked 119th in FIFA.
But recently, the Vietnamese team has been playing better with a 10-match unbeaten streak in all competitions (9 wins, 1 draw) and has made significant progress in the FIFA rankings.
Returning to the match against Laos on the evening of March 25, the Vietnamese team showed their superiority over their opponents.
Even if they had taken better advantage, coach Kim Sang-sik's students could have scored more goals against the neighboring team.
However, this result was enough to help Vietnam lead Group F of the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup with 3 points and a goal difference of +5. Meanwhile, Malaysia also had 3 points but ranked lower due to a lower goal difference of (+2).
