1. Military service 2024: Before Tet or after Tet?

On November 6, the Ministry of National Defense issued Official Dispatch 4267/BQP-TM on the selection and calling of citizens for military service in 2024.

Pursuant to the Law on Military Service 2015; Decision 82/QD-TTg dated October 4, 2023 of the Prime Minister on calling citizens to join the army in 2024; accordingly, in 2024, citizens will be selected and called to join the army (recruitment) in 1 batch; the time for receiving and handing over soldiers is within 3 days, from February 25 to February 27, 2024 ( from January 16 to January 18, Giap Thin year ).

Thus , the 2024 military service will come after Tet, specifically the military transfer period will fall from January 16 to January 18 of the year of the Dragon.

2. Military service 2024: How many years?

Specifically, Article 21 of the 2015 Law on Military Service stipulates the term of service of non-commissioned officers and soldiers as follows:

- The term of service in peacetime for non-commissioned officers and soldiers is 24 months .

- The Minister of National Defense may decide to extend the term of active service of non-commissioned officers and soldiers but not more than 06 months in the following cases:

+ To ensure combat readiness;

+ Performing tasks of preventing and fighting natural disasters, epidemics, and rescue.

- The service term of non-commissioned officers and soldiers in a state of war or a state of national defense emergency is carried out according to the general mobilization order or local mobilization order.

Thus , military service in 2024 will last 2 years, in some cases it can be extended but not more than 6 months.

3. Military service selection standards 2024

Pursuant to Article 4 of Circular 148/2018/TT-BQP, the criteria for military service selection are as follows:

(1) Age:

- Citizens from 18 to 25 years old.

- Male citizens with college or university degrees who have been temporarily deferred from military service during a training course of a training level will be selected and called up for military service until they are 27 years old.

(2) Political standards:

- Implement according to Joint Circular 50/2016/TTLT-BQP-BCA.

- For important and confidential agencies, units and positions in the Army; Honor Guards, Ceremonial Guards; Professional Military Guards and Control forces, selection is carried out according to regulations of the Ministry of National Defense.

(3) Health standards:

- Select citizens with health types 1, 2, 3 according to regulations in Joint Circular 16/2016/TTLT-BYT-BQP.

- For agencies, units, and positions specified in Point b, Clause 2, Article 4 of Circular 148/2018/TT-BQP, selection shall be conducted to ensure specific standards according to regulations of the Ministry of National Defense.

- Citizens with health category 3 or refractive eye defects (myopia 1.5 diopters or more, hyperopia of various degrees); drug addicts, HIV-infected, and AIDS are not called to enlist in the Army.

(4) Cultural standards:

- Select and call up citizens with an 8th grade education level or higher, from high to low. Localities with difficulties in meeting military recruitment targets will report to competent authorities for consideration and decision to select citizens with a 7th grade education level.

- Communes in remote areas, areas with especially difficult socio-economic conditions as prescribed by law; ethnic minorities with less than 10,000 people are allowed to recruit no more than 25% of citizens with primary education level, the rest are junior high school level or higher.
