On March 10, the Syrian government announced the end of its security campaign in the western coastal area, where many people support former President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrian Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdul Ghani confirmed that security threats in Latakia and Tartous have been neutralized.

Nearly 1,500 people have been killed since violence erupted last week, the majority of them civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The clashes have been in areas home to the Alawite minority – the ethnic group of former leader al-Assad.

Fighting on the Mediterranean coast began last week when forces supporting Mr al-Assad launched coordinated attacks on the new government's security forces.

The ambush escalated into revenge killings as thousands of armed men from the new Syrian regime poured into coastal areas, leading to chaos and high casualties. The government had to send reinforcements to Latakia and Tartous to regain control.

Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has vowed to crack down on the groups behind the violence and set up an independent investigation committee. He stressed that anyone who exceeded his authority would be severely punished.

Syrian security forces pledged to cooperate with the committee, providing full access to clarify the truth and ensure justice for the victims. Spokesman Abdul Ghani affirmed that the military operation had helped secure key routes, and said measures were being taken to prevent future threats.

Although the coastal campaign has ended, the situation in Syria remains volatile. Security forces recently repelled an attack on a checkpoint in Damascus. Two gunmen were arrested, while others escaped. It is unclear whether the attackers had any links to the former regime.

Some regional media outlets have accused Iran and its allies of being behind the recent wave of violence. However, Tehran has immediately denied it and condemned attacks on minorities in Syria.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei called the accusations “baseless and completely false.” He stressed that attacks on Alawites, Christians, Druze and other minorities were unacceptable and deeply hurt the region and the world.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday (March 7) that Tehran has remained an “observer” of the situation in Syria since the HTS takeover.

“We have no relationship with the current Syrian regime and we are in no hurry on this issue,” he said.

Although the new regime’s military campaign in Syria has ended, the risk of conflict remains. Ensuring lasting peace and stability will depend on how the new regime handles the remnants of the old regime, as well as its ability to deal with external forces seeking to interfere in Syria.
