Gừng Kỳ Sơn đã bắt đầu có chỗ đứng trên thị trường
Ky Son ginger has begun to gain a foothold in the market.

Dream of getting rich

One of the communes that grows the most ginger in Ky Son is Na Ngoi commune. It can be said that ginger is the spearhead economic development crop in this border commune. Remember, in 2019, after the ginger harvest, many families in Na Ngoi earned hundreds of millions of dong, escaping poverty in an instant.

Because of the great potential of ginger, Ky Son district, Nghe An province has established a profile and has been granted a Geographical Indication certificate for the product by the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology). And that is why the area of ginger cultivation in Ky Son district is increasingly increasing. That is why, in every commune, passing through many hills, the shadow of ginger trees can be seen on the fields and on the plantations. Along the entire border area, such as Bao Thang, Dooc May, Muong Long, Huoi Tu, Tay Son, Nam Can, Nam Can, Muong Ai, Muong Tip, Keng Du, Na Loi, Bac Ly, My Ly, Na Ngoi communes, ginger trees have taken root on the slopes of mountains and hills.

Previously, the ginger growing area in the whole Ky Son district was only 320-350 hectares, but in 2020 alone, the ginger growing area reached 468 hectares and has now reached nearly 1,000 hectares.

The peak of prices was in 2020 when ginger prices jumped from 33,000-35,000 VND/kg; at times even up to 40,000 VND/kg, making people cry with joy.

When the people are happy, the leaders at all levels are ten times happier. Mr. Vi Hoe, Secretary of the Ky Son District Party Committee, said: The people and we have considered ginger as a tree that can help us escape poverty and gradually become rich. In fact, in many hilly areas, if we do not grow ginger, it is very difficult to grow other crops due to the steep slope.

Ky Son ginger has been selected as one of the three typical products of the Western Nghe An region. The “reputation” of Ky Son ginger is increasingly spreading thanks to its quality, thanks to its geographical indications… The proof is that many tons of ginger have crossed mountains and forests to many countries around the world.

The pioneer who paved the way for Ky Son ginger to be exported is veteran Nguyen Van Luan. Mr. Luan is currently a member of the Association of Block 2, Veterans Association of Muong Xen town, Ky Son district; and is the Director of Huong Son Agricultural Services and Handicraft Cooperative (Huong Son Cooperative), Nghe An province.

Huong Son Cooperative of veteran Nguyen Van Luan is one of the largest units in Nghe An province in purchasing, consuming and exporting ginger. On average, each year, Huong Son Cooperative purchases more than 1,000 tons of ginger and processes it to supply to small traders for domestic consumption and export to markets in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and European countries.

Veteran Nguyen Van Luan shared: This is the basis for people to actively produce, promote consumption, and affirm the Ky Son ginger brand in the market. Up to now, there are 4 communes that have grown ginger that meet the criteria of businesses exporting abroad, including Tay Son, Ta Ca, Muong Long and Dooc May. On that basis, Huong Son Cooperative has built Ky Son ginger products into OCOP products to expand the consumption market. In 2020, the product "Ky Son Ginger" was granted a 3-star OCOP product certificate by the People's Committee of Nghe An province.

To make the ginger fields… more "sweet"

There would be nothing to say if it weren't for the fact that, recently, Ky Son ginger was low and difficult to sell. Especially in recent years, when people expanded their growing areas, the more products they harvested, the more difficult it was to sell. One year, they even called for rescue to help ginger farmers in the mountainous district of Ky Son.

The story of Ky Son ginger being difficult to sell is due to many reasons. In the ginger growing areas of Ky Son district, every commune grows both ginger varieties (de and buffalo horn). Mixing these two ginger varieties will inevitably produce different ginger products, which are not eye-catching, picky buyers, and difficult to sell, not to mention the quality is also different. Ky Son does not have a processing factory, the consumption market is limited, but the growing area is expanding, leading to supply exceeding demand, making it difficult to sell.

However, according to information from the district agricultural department, the price of ginger from the Lunar New Year to the beginning of January every year fluctuates from 18,000-25,000 VND/kg; during the season, the price is 12,000-15,000 VND/kg. At this price, ginger growers can rest assured to produce.

In fact, although there are times when Ky Son ginger faces many difficulties in consumption. However, both in the short and long term, it is still an indispensable crop in people's daily lives, both as a spice in meals and as a medicine, not only in the country but also in the world.

In order for Ky Son ginger to develop sustainably and effectively, according to some economic experts, it is necessary to choose good varieties and have a plan to plant as much ginger each year to produce as much as it is consumed; avoid oversupply, then push ginger growers and managers into a difficult situation of "calling for rescue".

An important factor is to establish close links with businesses inside and outside the province that have the capacity and conditions to produce and consume products. On this basis, it is necessary to call for investors to build ginger essential oil and ginger powder processing factories in Nghe An or preferably in Ky Son district to create conditions for expanding the area, stable long-term production, creating jobs, generating income...

In addition, it is also necessary to organize training courses on ginger production techniques and intensive cultivation for the people to have good quality ginger crops; especially, it is necessary to organize well the promotion and introduction of products on the media, so that domestic and foreign customers know to buy and invest in production and processing.../.
