In order to honor and promote the role of prestigious people, on November 23, 2023, the Government issued Decision 28/2023/QD-TTg amending Decision 12/2018/QD-TTg on criteria for selecting and recognizing prestigious people and policies for prestigious people among ethnic minorities, in which prestigious people enjoy information provision policies. Muong Xia festival is a unique cultural beauty of the Thai ethnic group associated with the merit of General Tu Ma Hai Dao, who defeated the invaders. Along with the advantage of fresh climate, stilt houses, unique cultural beliefs of the ethnic groups along with tourist attractions, it has become an attractive destination for tourists to come here to experience the community and exchange culture. Recently, the Politburo decided to exempt all tuition fees for students from kindergarten to high school at public schools nationwide, starting from the 2025-2026 school year. Receiving this information, many people, parents and teachers in Quang Ninh province are very excited because the policy not only helps reduce financial burden but also opens up better learning opportunities for students, especially those in remote areas, ethnic minority areas. In the new era, the 2nd generation (next generation) gene sequencing technology (Next-Generation Sequencing - NGS) is considered a revolution in the field of medicine and molecular biology. With her contributions to the economic development of ethnic minority households, Party member Ho Thi Thanh (far right) was awarded many certificates of merit by the People's Committee of Quang Binh province; the Ethnic Minorities Committee (now the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religion); and Minh Hoa district.

Party members go first to "pave the way"

We headed up to Hung village, Trong Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district (Quang Binh) in the first sunny spell of the season. Looking down from the slope on the top of Giang Man, the road to Hung village had been paved with green concrete like a thread running through the vast acacia forest. Looking down at the village, many new houses with green corrugated iron roofs had gradually replaced the old dilapidated houses with ash-leaf roofs. Taking in the whole Hung village, I wondered where the house of party member Ho Thi Thanh was?

Hung village has 33 households with 127 people, mainly Bru - Van Kieu ethnic people, the remaining few are Chut ethnic people. Due to the remote terrain and lack of land for production, the people's lives are still difficult. When the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas was implemented, Hung village gradually put on a new look. The "colors" of reinforced cement in the Hung village residential area stabilization project; Traffic roads into the village and the "3-hard" houses have given Hung village a new look.

The model of raising local pigs has brought a stable income to Ms. Ho Thi Thanh's family.

Along with the ethnic policies that the Party and State are supporting for villages, including Hung village, ethnic minority party members like Ms. Ho Thi Thanh are an important "internal resource" helping people to change their thinking and actions.

Ms. Ho Thi Thanh was honored to become an official party member in 2013. A year before that, Ms. Thanh had cherished the idea of building a model of raising native pigs. Instead of letting the pigs roam free and forage for food as before, Ms. Thanh built a pen to keep them and used agricultural by-products to feed them. Thanks to the confinement, diseases were controlled and pig productivity was increased.

To date, Ms. Thanh’s family is raising 20 native pigs. The native pig raising model has brought her family an income of over 100 million VND/year. In addition, her family also raises chickens and grows 5 hectares of acacia. With a stable income, Ms. Thanh’s family has built a solid house and provided for their children’s education.

Sharing with reporters, Ms. Thanh said: “Raising indigenous pigs, also known as wild pigs, is quite simple. Mainly taking advantage of available foods, such as sweet potato leaves, banana trees, cassava, corn, rice bran for food, so the cost is low. On the contrary, indigenous pigs have high resistance, so they are less susceptible to diseases but the cost is high.”

People learn and follow

Up to now, the movement of raising local pigs has been expanded to many places in the ethnic minority areas of Minh Hoa district. Pigs have become the main livestock helping many ethnic minority households here escape poverty. It is not by chance that Ms. Thanh is the one who leads and opens the way for the people to change their thinking and way of doing things. Because in the process of developing her model of raising local pigs and planting acacia, Ms. Thanh has mobilized and shared her experiences so that the people can boldly follow.

Ms. Ho Thi Uyen in La Trong 1 village, Trong Hoa commune, is a typical example. Previously, Ms. Uyen's family was a poor household in the locality. Once, when Party member Ho Thi Thanh introduced her to the method of raising local pigs, Ms. Uyen was very interested. To understand more, Ms. Uyen went to Party member Ho Thi Thanh's house to learn from her experience.

Here, Ms. Thanh enthusiastically guided Ms. Uyen on how to build a pig pen, how to buy piglets, and how to take care of the pig herd. Ms. Uyen followed her lead, and after 5 years, Ms. Uyen was proficient in caring for and preventing diseases while raising local pigs. During that time, Ms. Uyen's family's economy has continuously improved. Currently, Ms. Uyen is raising 8 pigs for meat and 1 piglet. On average, her family earns about 70 million VND per year from selling pigs for meat.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Trong Hoa commune, there are currently over 30 households raising pigs with a scale of 7 pigs or more. Pigs have become the main livestock helping many ethnic minority households in the border commune of Trong Hoa escape poverty.

Now, local pigs have become the main livestock, helping many ethnic minority households in Minh Hoa district escape poverty sustainably.

Good news spread far and wide. In 2018, some Chut households in Hoa Son commune, Minh Hoa district - a locality where 76% of the population are Chut people - went to Ms. Ho Thi Thanh's house to learn about the model of raising local pigs. Once they knew how to raise local pigs, many Chut households started building pens, buying pig breeds to raise, and gradually increasing the herd. To date, pigs have become the main livestock of the Chut people in Hoa Son commune.

Up to now, the whole Hoa Son commune has 50 Chut households raising pigs, with a scale of 30-50 pigs. There are many households raising pigs in captivity with 7-15 pigs. This not only brings income to help many Chut households in Hoa Son escape poverty, but also helps people change their farming habits from free-range to caged to control diseases and improve farming efficiency.

Với quy mô nuôi 50 con lợn rừng, gia đình anh Đinh Minh Thân người Chứt ở xã Hóa Sơn (Minh Hóa, Quảng Bình) có thu nhập trên 150 triệu đồng năm
With a scale of raising 50 wild boars, the family of Mr. Dinh Minh Than, Chut ethnic group in Hoa Son commune, Minh Hoa district has an income of over 150 million VND per year.

To further develop the model of raising local pigs, the People's Committee of Hoa Son commune has opened more training courses on techniques of raising local pigs for the people. Along with that, agricultural promotion policies help the people develop livestock to develop the household economy.

From the bold pioneering of Party member Ho Thi Thanh in Hung village, Trong Hoa commune, the model of raising native pigs has now spread to many ethnic minority households in Minh Hoa district. Raising native pigs not only helps people have more livelihoods to escape poverty sustainably, this model also helps people change their thinking in raising and producing livestock. From pigs, people have developed raising goats, cows, etc.

From "production for consumption", people have shifted towards producing goods and special goods to increase economic value and income, thereby creating conditions to improve and enhance the quality of life.
