South Korea's ruling party opposes impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol

According to Yonhap, on the afternoon of December 7, President Yoon's People Power Party (PPP) decided to reject the impeachment motion against the President, just minutes before the National Assembly was set to hold a plenary session, according to information from party officials.

The PPP also announced its opposition to a bill calling for a special investigation into allegations of corruption and election interference involving First Lady Kim Keon Hee.

Although this is the official stance of the PPP, lawmakers still have the right to vote according to their personal decisions. At 5:00 p.m. Seoul time (3:00 p.m. Vietnam time) today, the South Korean National Assembly will vote to approve the impeachment resolution of President Yoon proposed by the opposition parties.

For a motion to impeach President Yoon to pass, the support of at least two-thirds of the National Assembly, or 200 out of 300 seats, is needed. Currently, President Yoon's People Power Party holds 108 seats.

Thus, the opposition needs at least eight votes in favor from PPP lawmakers to reach the required number. If the motion is passed by the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court will receive it and must make a decision within a maximum period of 180 days.

Earlier, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon said President Yoon's early resignation had become inevitable, after Yoon publicly apologized for the martial law political crisis this week. Han told reporters that the president was no longer in a position to effectively carry out his duties.

It is not yet clear whether Mr. Han supports impeachment or suggests that President Yoon voluntarily resign.

However, according to Yonhap , Mr. Han appeared to implicitly support the impeachment motion led by the opposition, citing the possibility that President Yoon Suk-yeol could take other "extreme" actions, despite strong opposition from within the PPP.

Regarding the possibility of amending the Constitution to shorten the presidential term, Mr. Han said the party will consider and discuss to come up with the best solution. Political observers are looking at the possibility of the PPP discussing measures to amend the Constitution to ensure an orderly exit for Mr. Yoon, instead of a scandalous departure through impeachment.

Mr. Han, a former prosecutor and close aide to President Yoon, also said he would consult Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on essential issues, especially those related to people's lives, to minimize possible negative impacts.

" I have asked the prime minister to carefully and stably manage issues related to people's lives and national governance, so that the public will not feel anxious ," Han told reporters.

In the event that President Yoon is suspended from office, Prime Minister Han will assume the role of acting President.
