No time to be sad
At nearly midnight on August 31, when the traffic on Mai Chi Tho Street (Thu Duc City) began to thin out, the city also fell asleep… at the construction site of An Phu intersection, the atmosphere was still very urgent and bustling.

Under the construction site lights, dozens of workers and machinery were working busily. Some on the manhole cover, some on the bottom of the tunnel, everyone was busy with their tasks.
Having just finished installing the waterproof carpet, Mr. Nguyen Duc Hung (53 years old, from Nghe An) sat down in a corner of the construction site, quickly lighting a cigarette to stay awake in the middle of the night.
As the smoke gradually faded into the darkness, he said that over the past 40 years, he had participated in one project after another. So many that he could no longer remember how many projects he had contributed to, nor how many times he had celebrated the holidays and Tet away from home.

"For construction workers, holidays and normal days are the same, we are used to this, busy day and night, there is no time to be sad. At the construction site, we work in shifts, when the shift ends, we take the opportunity to rest to regain our health for the next shift," said Mr. Hung.
In another corner of the construction site, Mr. Lo Van May (31 years old, from Nghe An) was also busy welding steel pillars. With his nimble and experienced hands, in just a few minutes, he had firmly connected a large iron bar.
Gently wiping the sweat running down his face, Mr. May shared that he has been attached to this construction site for nearly a year. Although the work is hard and requires a lot of strength, he always tries to complete it well.

According to Mr. May, workers work in three shifts, each lasting 8 hours, taking turns working 24 hours a day. When necessary, they have to work overtime to keep up with the schedule. For workers, the night shift is the most difficult, because it is easy to lose strength due to lack of sleep and limited vision. But over time, everyone gradually gets used to the pace and requirements of the job.
"Although we are tired, every time we complete a stage, we feel relieved and happy. I really look forward to the day the project is completed, so I can proudly tell everyone that I contributed my efforts here," said Mr. May with a bright smile.
Complete two bridges in September
Present at the construction site, Mr. Lai Van Mien, commander of construction package 5, contractor Thanh Phat, continuously observed and urged staff and workers.
Mr. Mien said that construction package 5 has 19 tunnel segments, including 4 closed tunnels and 15 open tunnels. Currently, the contractor is focusing on completing tunnel segments K7, K8 (closed tunnels) and segment K12 (open tunnel).

Currently, tunnel segments K7 and K8 have had their covers and walls poured, and are preparing to complete the K8 tunnel cover. After completing these tunnel segments, the contractor will restore the road surface, open the K7 and K8 tunnel covers to traffic, and then continue construction on tunnel segments K9 and K10. Mr. Mien said that the contractor is closely following the project's progress.
Sharing about the difficulties and challenges in implementing the package, Mr. Mien said that the construction area has a large volume of traffic, especially container trucks running to Cat Lai port, causing difficulties in traffic flow.
In addition, the amount of groundwater in the tunnel area is quite high, so the contractor spends a lot of time and effort to handle it. Regarding machinery, equipment and human resources, the contractor is always proactive and ensures to meet the requirements.

"The package currently has about 60 workers working in shifts continuously. Because it is a key traffic project of the city, we arrange for our staff to work through the night and holidays to keep up with the progress. On the occasion of the September 2 holiday, we organized a light meal at the construction site to encourage the spirit of our brothers," said Mr. Mien.
Speaking with reporters from Giao thong Newspaper, Mr. Luong Minh Phuc, Director of the HCM City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (Traffic Board) said that the An Phu intersection project is identified as a key project, contributing to reducing traffic congestion in the eastern part of the city.
Accordingly, the Traffic Department is striving to complete the first two bid packages, including Ba Dat Bridge and Giong Ong To 2 Bridge, by September 2024.

"Although these projects have not been put into operation yet and have not connected the common area, Ho Chi Minh City and the Transport Department are still determined to complete them, both to prepare for the next work and to increase the disbursement of public investment capital," said Mr. Phuc.
In addition, the An Phu intersection project is expected to open the first tunnel by the end of 2024. By 2025, the second tunnel and four overpasses will be completed to serve the people.
An Phu Interchange is an important traffic junction, especially at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City. This intersection is the starting point of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, connecting with main roads such as Mai Chi Tho, Luong Dinh Cua, Dong Van Cong. This intersection plays an important role in connecting traffic between Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast provinces, while reducing the load on inner-city roads.
According to the design plan, An Phu intersection has 3 floors: 2-way underpass connecting Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway with Mai Chi Tho street (Thu Thiem tunnel side) extending through Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong intersection. On the ground, small islands will be built at intersections combined with traffic lights, and 2 overpasses will be built above.
This structure helps to increase traffic capacity, reduce travel time and limit traffic jams in this area, especially during rush hour.
The project started construction at the end of 2022 and is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025 with an investment of about VND 3,400 billion. This is considered the most modern intersection in Ho Chi Minh City.
