Alphabet's Google launched a test version of its search engine yesterday (March 5), completely removing the classic 10 blue links in favor of summaries created by artificial intelligence (AI).
This new feature, available to subscribers of the Google One AI Premium plan, can be accessed via the results page of any search query by clicking on the tab labeled “AI Mode” located next to existing options like Images and Maps.
“We’ve heard a lot of feedback from power users that they want AI answers for even more searches,” VP of product Robby Stein said in a blog post.
Google One AI Premium is a $19.99 per month service plan that offers additional cloud storage and premium access to some AI features.
Google now shows AI Overviews — summaries that increasingly appear above traditional links to relevant websites — to users in more than 100 countries. The company began adding ads to AI Overviews last May.
With AI Mode, users will see a more comprehensive AI summary with links to cited websites. The 10 blue links have been replaced with a search bar to ask follow-up questions.
Google says AI Mode is powered by a customized version of the Gemini 2.0 model, with inference capabilities that help it better handle complex queries.
Alphabet’s $350 billion in revenue by 2024 will come largely from search-related advertising. But the company is facing its biggest challenge to its core business in years from AI rivals, led by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, which added search functionality to ChatGPT last October.
In December 2024, chief investment officer Ruth Porat said at the Reuters NEXT conference that Google has made its biggest bet on integrating AI into its search engine.
In February, edtech company Chegg sued Google, alleging that Google's previews reduce demand for original content and harm publishers' ability to compete.
