A father in China took his son out to sell goods in the cold to show him how hard it is to make money and encourage him to study harder. The father's actions have sparked heated discussions on social media in the country of one billion people.
The boy stood selling goods in the cold snow at minus 10 degrees Celsius.
In a recent video shared on BaiLu Video, a father and son sit together selling goods in the cold weather in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. The boy, about 8-9 years old, wears a thick coat, standing selling packaged sunflower seeds, sweet corn and other specialties.
On the stall there is a sign that reads: "I lack confidence in my studies so I have to go out to work to earn money to support my life. Please support me. Thank you very much."
This caught the attention of a woman surnamed Cat - who filmed the clip and shared it on BaiLu Video. "It must have been minus 10 degrees that day, very cold. The boy was quite resilient, just standing there looking at the stall. His father just stood silently beside him watching," said Ms. Cat.
She also commented that the child was very well-behaved and hoped that people would support this small stall. However, most passersby wanted the boy to know that making money was not easy, so they just stood from afar and watched.

After the video went viral on social media, the father's strict parenting style stirred up heated discussions, with most comments supporting the father's approach.
"Passersby should ask for the price and negotiate but end up not buying! That would be a more vivid lesson", "Not stopping by his stall actually benefits the boy, it teaches him that money is not as easy to earn as he thinks", "Let the child experience the challenges of life, then come back to study hard!"...
Chinese culture often employs strict parenting to instill discipline and academic excellence, with the long-term goal of ensuring their success in life.
In May 2023, a seven-year-old boy in Fujian Province, southeast China, did not want to go to school and was sent by his mother to their family's candle factory. After a tiring shift from 8am to 6pm, the boy learned what manual labor was and decided to go back to school.
In September 2023, a girl in Fujian Province said she did not want to go to school and wanted to collect scrap metal to earn money. Her parents agreed, but when she arrived at the landfill to collect it, she was shocked by the working conditions and repeatedly vomited from the stench.
