The Importance of Facing Difficulties
Difficulties and challenges are indispensable elements in every child’s journey to adulthood. When children face obstacles, they not only practice problem-solving skills but also learn how to develop themselves in difficult situations. This not only helps children get out of their comfort zone but also stimulates their hidden potential, thereby building resilience and self-confidence.

The Johari Window theory suggests that exposure to new challenges (the unknown) opens up opportunities for learning and experience. When children are faced with challenges they have never encountered before, they are likely to develop new skills and approaches, which will better prepare them for future situations.
Furthermore, children who have experienced many difficulties will become stronger, more adaptable and able to cope with complex challenges in later life.
What solutions help parents teach their children how to cope with challenges?
Speaking to reporters of Family and Society (Health and Life Newspaper), Dr. Nguyen Hanh Lien (lecturer of the Department of Psychology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) said that in order to effectively educate children about facing difficulties, parents and teachers need to design challenges that are appropriate to the child's abilities and age. One of the important principles is to determine the child's zone of proximal development, which are tasks that the child can perform with a little support.
Dr. Hanh Lien stated that when children are challenged in these areas, they will feel interested and motivated to complete them. On the contrary, if the challenges are too much or beyond their current abilities, they will easily feel discouraged, disappointed, and afraid of failure. This can lead to children no longer wanting to try new tasks, negatively affecting their psychological and emotional development.
Therefore, adjusting the difficulty level of exercises and challenges is extremely necessary to ensure that children have a positive learning experience. In addition, the child's mindset also plays an important role. A family environment full of love and unconditional support will create a solid foundation for children to feel safe and confident when facing difficulties.
Sharing about this issue, Dr. Hanh Lien said that parents should emphasize that success or failure is not a measure of their love for their children. Affirming that love still exists regardless of the outcome will help children develop a more stable mentality in facing challenges.
Dr. Nguyen Hanh Lien emphasized that love does not mean ignoring children's mistakes. Parents need to clearly distinguish between love and education. It is necessary to reprimand and help children realize inappropriate behavior, but it is important that after the problem is handled, children need to understand that their parents' love is not affected by mistakes. This will help children accept mistakes, learn from experiences and develop responsibility.
Ultimately, teaching children how to cope with adversity is not just a parent or teacher’s job, but a community journey. By creating an environment that is loving and challenging at the right level, parents and teachers can help children develop into confident, resilient adults who are ready to overcome life’s challenges.
